Any tips about best way to travel to Mull for a day in early November from Glasgow. Thanks.

The average train time from Glasgow to Oban is 3 hours 22 minutes. Then you would need to connect to a ferry to Mull. Add at least another hour? A few moments on Mull and then retrace your steps?

Is there any way you can do this as an overnight?

Thanks. I was really thinking about hiring a driver to take us to Mull and then back to Glasgow. Any ideas?

Mull is definitely worth a trip and try to do a B and B. Oban too is quite nice so that could be a another option for an overnight to save on travel.

Assuming your goal is to go to Iona, keep in mind that the average speed on Mull is about 30mph due to the single track roads, so the 37 mile drive from Craignure to Fionnphort to catch the ferry to Iona will be over an hour. We just made the drive from Tobermory on Mull to Glasgow last Saturday and it was about 30 minutes to Craignure to catch the ferry, 45 minute ferry ride and then 2.5 hours to Glasgow. So if you start adding up the time to Iona: 2.5 hours to Oban, arrive at the ferry terminal 30 minutes early, 45 minute ferry to Craignure, 60 minutes to Fionnphort, 10 minute ferry ride to Iona. 1 way trip will be almost 5 hours just to arrive at your destination.

Mull is a worthy destination, but there is nothing to see in Craignure and any drive you want to make will be about an hour 1 way and on those single track roads there are very few places to turn off and enjoy the view if you're the driver.

This is all good information. Our one goal on Mull is to visit the grounds of Duart Castle, the home of the Maclean clan for more than 700 years. My maiden name is McLean, and many of my relatives have visited there over the years. Unfortunately, we will only be able to tour the grounds since the castle will be closed for the season. Is Oban a good place to stay for a night?

Oban is a good spot for an overnight when visiting Mull. Just bear in mind you might have weather delays or cancelations of ferries due to storms. Sun sets at around 4.30 in November and darkness falls quickly.
