Day tour or train to Lake Garda from Venice

We were on a 10 day trip to Venice, Florence and Rome in 2016. We are planning to go back again possibly end of May next year. We would like to visit Lake Garda on a day tour or maybe taking the train from Venice. Which would you recommend? We will be in Venice 3 days.

Thanks for any recommendations

We took the train from Verona to Desenzano on Lake Garda in early May 2014. The ferries weren't operating on their summer schedule at that time. We walked around Sirmione and it was okay - I wish we had either stayed in Verona or else taken an escorted day tour and seen more of what Lake Garda has to offer.

The mountains surrounding Lake Garda are more dramatic the farther north you go up the lake. Why not spend a night on the lake? We enjoyed staying in Saló and Malcesine. From Saló we drove up to the Dolomites for three nights, awesome scenery. We stayed in Malcesine on the way back from the Dolomites at Il Castelo right on a beach. Just another thought for you.

I recommend you to forget that idea. You will spend all day traveling and see very little of the lake. Go to Burano instead.

Next time you are in Italy you should spend a week at Lake Garda.

I have done the opposite in the past. Staying at lake Garda and going to Venice on a day trip (leaving around 6:00 and returning around 23:00). Never again.

Thank you all for your suggestions but we think we will take a pass and not do a day trip to Lake Carda area from Venice. Maybe another trip and include more of the northern lakes area.

Thanks again.
