Day Tour of Barcelona and Monserrat with Spain Day Tours.

Today I went to Monserrat, Park Guell and around Barcelona with Spain Day Tours

It was not a good experience. I could never recommend Spain Day Tours after today.

Some of you might remember that there were some misgivings based on earlier experiences but thing seemed to Improve enough so that I felt good about booking the day excursion

I found Spain day Tours to be inefficient, incompetent and misleading among other things. There was deceit. There were inaccuracies.

I am not going to be able to fully write about my experience this evening. There is not the time but I thought that I would begin

We never got to Magic Mountsin although that was supposed to be one of the attractions. We were to visit.

We only got to spend 30 minutes total in the Bascillica at Monserrat. We never saw a the Black Virgin. We never got to eat at Monserrat or shop or go to the museum.

We only got to spend 45 minutes at Park Guell total.

At both Monserrat and Park Guell, the tour guide did not go in with us. She let us off a short distance from the front door and waited outside. We were on our own. And would have to find our way back to the vehicle.

There were five guests total. there was a family of three and they took off and did their own thing. there was myself and another elderly woman who I was left looking after.

More to come.

Editing and updating

So let me get to the beginning. SDT was going to originally pick me up at 8:30 .we were supposed to go the Barcelona and then on to Monserrat. This was changed to my being picked up at 8 am and we were going to go to Monserrat first and then Barcelona.

I was being picked up outside the Olivia Plaza Hotel. In front of the bus stops.

I began to worry ehen 8 am came and went and no van appeared. About 8:15, I phoned SDT and fortunately someone answered who spoke very good English. The are actually in Canada or The United States. I told them the tour guide had still not arrived and he got on it. In the meantime, another tour company heard my distress and pointed out a woman from SDT who was looking for her guests

So I connected with my tour guide. Who had expected me to be outside of the hotel, not outside of the bus stops which makes perfect sense.

But she was still looking for a family of three. As it turned out, they were inside the lobby of the hotel. First they had been Tod, they were going to be picked up outside of their hotel, then they were to,d t go to the Olivia Pkaza Hotel but to sit in the lobby.

Anyway, there was now myself and a family of three and we had another woman to pick up at Eurostar. She was an elderly woman like myself.

She was outside her hotel but we were late and no o e from SDT called her to tell her we were going to be late.

OK so now we are on our way to Monserrat. And that was fine. Our tour guide was very knowleadgable. And pleasant and articulate. And informative.

Well we get to Monserrat and we were informed that she would not be entering the Basillica with us. There is now a blur of memory. We were going to be on our own. And she goes on and on about the small bus that will take us back to where she would be parked and we had to wave it down.

And I remember asking “are you telling us that you are not coming in with us” and she said “yes”

We had not been told that we would be on our own in the Basillica. We were also be told that we had to pay extra if we wanted to see The Black Virgin even though that was advertised as a highlight.

To be continued.

Continuing on

Some memory is jumbled. There was so much that I was not expecting.

So our tout guiide takes pictures of us before we enter the Basillica. . She walks to the door with us and shows security our tickets and she left. She was going to wait in the van at what she called the roundabout. Where you turn around.

The family of three went off on their own. And I was left with the other older woman.

We had been told to meet at the van by 11 am. And it was maybe a little after 10 am. And it was a bit if a walk going back to where she was parked.

We had about 45 minutes of time to do everything which included eating and shopping.

I was afraid of getting stranded. So I just sat in one of the back pews.

The family of three had no interest in being involved with myself and the other lady.

We five did begin the walk back to the van together. But they detoured or whatever and I was left alone with the other lady. She did no hear well. English was not her first language but she was ok.

But she got disoriented and confused . She did no understand what the tour guide had told us. She thought the tour guide expected us to wait outside the church for her .

She kept wanting to turn around and go back to the church and I had to keep making her walk to the roundabout.

It did work out. The tour guide saw us approaching and came to meet us but then we had to wait for the family of three.

Finally we came together again And we began to drive back to Barcelona taking a different route

I was feeling most unhappy with Spain Day Tours.

Now zi can not remember what happened in what order

But we had a nice lunch in Barcelona which we paid for ourselves.

We went to Park Guell but again the tour guide did not come in with us. She forgot to give us our tickets so someone in the group had to go get her.

She came to the entrance with us and the five of us entered together bu the family of three went off and I was left with the other elderly woman to walk around. We had 45 minutes total. So how much could we see.

Before Patk Guell, we made some other stops. At Port Vell, the guide told me that she received information from Spain day Tours that I still owed money. Which was wrong. I was paid in full and had a receipt to sow it.

From Park Guell, we went to the last stop which was La Familia . I began to get out and the guide to,d me not to, she said the family of three had been the previous day and they were going to be walking back to their hotel . The other older woman had bought a ticket to enter La Familia and I was coming Saturday. She told mt hat I could see the outside when I came on Saturday.

I was now her only passenger and she good me home and that was that.

I paid 106 euros plus 9 euros for Park Guell

We were told that we were going to see The Black Madonna and never did, we were never taken to Magic Mountain. Our final stop so I believe was to walk around the outside of La Familia but we did no do that.

I do not recall what else we might have been told that we did not see

We were never told that the tour guide was not going to be coming into the Basillica with us or not coming int Park Guell with us.

Excuse the spelling errors please. I am writing fast on my iPad

As said, I can not ever recommend Spain Day Tours based on my experiences today.

still owed money.

Not good. The guide should have stayed outside the church to answer any questions and take you back to the van. Leaving you on your own was irresponsible. A lot of places don’t allow guides inside, but they need to be close by.

I’m so sad for you. I know you looking forward to this, especially the trip to Montserrat. The tour guide really let you down. It isn’t uncommon for certain sites to limit the type of guide who can do on-site guiding, but they still should remain available outside.. Are you feeling comfortable about your visit to La Sagrada Familia?

I am also sorry to read your report.

I am wondering if there might be some confusion as to what the "Magic Mountain" actually consists of. My understanding, of which I will happily accept corrections, is that this is a nickname for Monserrat. Since you were at the Basilica, you were indeed on the mountain. Hiking the various trails or perhaps the funicular or train would be the way to experience more of the mountain. I can tell you from personal experience that the hiking with its steep inclines is not easy.

I have not read the Spain Day Tours tour description, so don't know what you were led to expect. This link uses the term "magic mountain" and mentions specific spots available to tourists on Montserrat:
https://barcelonalocalexperiences.com/montserrat-visit-the-most-magical-mountain-in-catalonia/
I can imagine if you found similar descriptions in your research that access to some of these places was something you had expected from your tour - very disappointing!

I hope this is the worst experience of your trip and the rest improves!

Yes, what ORDTraveller said about “Magic Mountain.” I’ve visited Barcelona about five times and am not familiar with an attraction called Magic Mountain.

There’s the Magic Fountain - which are the fountains at the foot of Montjuic. But the only thing I can find in Barcelona called “Magic Mountain” is a random children’s play area. So I’m very confused about what it is that you didn’t visit, if that makes sense.

It’s such a shame about your guided tour experience, though, because Montserrat is actually quite easy as a self-guided trip, as is La Sagrada Familia.

sorry they let you down.

What makes me happy is that you didn't mention your knee - it seems that the shot worked!!!

Hello Nigel

Yes, this injection has wprked for now. Still some discomfort with legs, feet and back but most manageable. Pain is greatly controlled compared to last year nevertheless I am aware that the injection only masks the pain and I will need surgery soon enough.

I also have brought and am using Voltaren.

I was better prepared.

Thank you for asking

When I referred to Magic Mountain, I was actually thinking of Montjuic. I was unable to remember Montjuic, and thought that it meant Magic Mountain in English which I coulld remember.

Sorry for any typos but I am on my iPad and it sometimes seems that playfull spirits types for me

Thanks to those who clarified that tour guides may not allowed in some of the attractions they take us to

She should have told us if that was so. Then I understand

Ah. It actually means Mountain of the Jews, I think. It’s not difficult to see it by public transport so if there’s a particular attraction there that you wanted to see, I’m sure we could advise.

So sorry your tour was such a wash-out.

Dear Phil, I will echo what others have already said -- I am sorry your tour was not a good experience and you were disappointed. I am NOT trying to put the blame on you. But I wonder if you made assumptions about what would be included in the tour and the services you would receive (such as the guide coming with you into the Basilica). Do you have anything in writing from Spain Day Tours that specifies what is included in the tour, what exactly you will get to see, visit, and how much time you will have at each location? Did the tour confirmation provide this information? The Spain Day Tours website is very light on details.

If you have this information in writing and the tour did not deliver what they promised, you have every right to complain to them and ask for a refund.

I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.

Mary

I believe you board the ship Oct. 20th? Do you sail that day or do you still have time in Barcelona? I’m impressed that you used the metro - we thought it was pretty easy, but when you’re doing it on your own the first time, that can be challenging. I’m assuming someone clued you in that Hotel Continental is where George Orwell stayed when he visited Barcelona during the Spanish Civil war.

I sailed on October 20 and was very busy on the 19th so I only now came across some of the postings that were made on October 19th, today November 29. I have not yet been back a month

Mary from Massachusetts, I can not read the description of the tour that I was supposed to get from Spain Day Tours because I get too upset.

I did write Spain Day Tours expressing my dissatisfaction and asked for a refund of $30.00. Tey apologized and issued me a refund of $30.00 but now I wished that I had asked for about $50.00. I try to be fair in dealing with others.
