Colmar vs burgundy

What would be a good 2/3 days visit with a 11 year old -colmar or burgundy ?

Where in Burgundy?

I think Colmar, though touristy, is very visually appealing, and it's a manageable size. The Unterlinden Museum is a really fine one, but I don't know what specific things there are to do in Colmar that would especially appeal to an 11-year-old.

Dijon has a good market operating Tuesdays Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I think markets usually have at least some interest for kids.

Was thinking of beaune as a home base in burgundy
But confused what will appeal to a 11 year old.

I agree with Rose that Colmar would be very appealing visually to a child (the Unterlinden/Issenheim much less so of course). But the scale of Colmar and the colorful houses that look a bit as they're out of a coloring book, the stork iconography everywhere, the rivers/canals etc. all make Alsace very charming.

@Rose, the question is what would appeal to your 11-year-old. Parks for running ? Art museum ? Zoo/animals ? Shopping ? Cooking class ? Hotel with English-language television ?

Parks for animals
Any kind of science activities
Even history which is exciting
But not so much just old monuments one after the other😊

Strasbourg is a large city and an easy day-trip from Colmar. Maybe check TripAdvisor's Things To Do list for Strasbourg. There is almost certainly some sort of zoo, and there might be a good science museum. Strasbourg wouldn't be a bad place to stay itself, especially if you find it has a lot of child-friendly activities. I think hotels may be more costly there, however, and Colmar is better positioned for side-trips to other cute Alsatian towns and villages.

I think kids will enjoy Beaune's Hotel Dieu hospital museum, but you wouldn't spend more than two hours there. After that, they also have a great Saturday market (smaller on Wednesday), a bit of a ramparts walk, a mustard mill, a rather minor gothic cathedral, a summer-evening light show, and plenty of wine touring options. Train time to the bigger city of Dijon is only 20 minutes each way, so you can certainly expand your options in that direction. Dijon's Owl's Trail self-guided walking route helps you see the best of the historic district.

From Colmar there's a ruined castle - the name is something like Haute Koenigsberg - and very close to it is Monkey Mountain, where you can interact with a colony of about 100 Barbary apes (small monkeys). It's a place to preserve and protect the animals and teach people about them,, not to exploit them. They run free within the park.

Ooops just saw that Chris aready recommended it. Don't skip the monkeys. Also, keep a look out for the storks that nest everywhere. binoculars will be useful.
