Basque Country guide

On Saturday and Sunday, September 6 & 7, we four are going to be in Basque Country. Looking for a guide to drive us to St Jean de Port to see the Pyrenees and the start of the Camino de Santiago. We'd also like to see Bilboa and the Guggenheim.

Haven't decided where to base for those two nights. Suggestions?

Hi

I've been to the Basque Country a number of times, flying in and out of Bilbao Airport and hiring a car. The motorway network mow enables easy East-West and North-South travel through the region, but the roads off those are slower to travel. The two obvious places to stay would be in the Bilbao area, and in the area of San Sebastian. Of course both are the biggest tourist draws, which carries advantages and disadvantages. An interesting alternative would be to consider Vitoria, which is more central to the region, very picturesque, and allows easier exploration of the south including the Rioja region.

I've also just visited the area with a rental car (staying in Hondarribia) or using public transport (staying in Bilbao and San Sebastian), neither of which were particularly difficult. See also www.gorilla-trip.com for our recommended guide Agustin Ciriza, but note that his time can fill up.
