Where to stay in Prague, both area and room suggestions

Our first time in Prague so zero experience with the city. Where are nice areas of the city to use as a base for exploring by foot/public transportation?

Lodging suggestions are always welcome. Clean and quiet is important, luxury isn't important. The only amenities that are important are reliable WiFi and a private bathroom (to keep DW happy). Self-service laundry is a plus. I'll be coming from Dresden by train, and continuing to Vienna later by train. Something convenient to those travel legs would be a plus but not essential.

My wife and I have twice been to Prague after Viking river cruises. We’ve stayed at the Hilton Prague and the Art Nouveau Palace Hotel. The Art Nouveau Palace Hotel is on the edge of the old town and within a short walk to many sights. Not sure if either has self-service laundry. We were pleased with both hotels.

I stayed in the Old Town at the Hotel Leonardo in Prague. The establishment and location was the best of my four different stays. There was an inexpensive (in 2017) but excellent wash, dry and fold laundromat less than three blocks away on the same street - Čistírna oděvů a kůží/LAUNDROMAT Karolíny Světlé 11 Praha 1 110 00 Žatecká 475 Louny 440 01. I would gladly return to both again.

We have loved two separate one week stays in Hotel Anna in Vinohrady district. It's clean, quiet and does a very nice breakfast. For laundry, we just use Andy's laundromat which is about 100 yards away.

Vinohrady is a short tram or metro ride to the tourist areas but has NO CROWDS. It's a safe and walkable area to sights like Zizkov tower and Wenceslas Sqare. Lots of inexpensive restaurants too.

It's very easy to get to and from the main train station. We had no trouble arriving/leaving by train with luggage.

Try the Hotel 987. It will be convenient for you as it's a 2 minute walk to the main train station where you will arrive and depart. No self-service laundry though. Tram stop just along from the hotel gets you to Republic Square in 4 minutes. From there it's a 5 minute walk to the Old Town Square.

We’ve stayed in two different locations in four hotels over the years. The one we go back to now is always on calm, un crowded, convenient, Kampa Island. Some rooms have a view of the Charles Bridge but all rooms have a view of the cobbled streets, trees and beautiful buildings on the island.

Mona, sounds like Hotel Golden Scissors was a real hit. Looking right now to spend some time in Prague in the middle of April. Any downsides to this place other than no elevator?

I really enjoyed both Old Town as well as Vinohrady the two times I visited.
If you want to be in the heart of the city, Old Town is the place to stay. Vinohrady is a quieter area compared to Old Town and Lesser Town, but still offers plenty of restaurants, cafes, and shops. Both options have excellent transport links.

As for where to stay, I found some great suggestions here: Where to stay in Prague

Residence Agnes is the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The amount you pay is nothing in comparison to what you get back from the hotel.

First, I really want to go to Prague again. We absolutely loved it!
We stayed in Mala Strana at the Hotel Red Lion. It's a bit of a walk up the hill. But, totally worth it.
I don't believe there was an elevator. We were on the second floor overlooking the courtyard.
When the gas lights are lit at night, the glowing streets are stunning.
Also, walk up to top of hill at the Monastery. There is a restaurant called Peklo (ironic, yes). Must eat there.
Have a great time!

My wife and I stayed at this airbnb in December 2022 for 5 nights. Quiet neighborhood, short walk to the Charles Bridge and street car. There are a nice variety of restaurants in the neighborhood as well. I would recommend both the neighborhood and the airbnb unit.

We stayed at Hotel Leon d'Oro which was in a very central location. Our room was clean, spacious and well kept with plenty of seating. We had two sets of windows that we could open which was nice to get some fresh air. I do not know about laundry, but our room had good WIFI and a private bathroom.
