Is it best to get cash from the airport after arriving in Prague or in the city at an ATM? Do most places in Czechia take credit cards? We will want to have some cash on hand but want to use primarily CC if at all possible. How much should we get for occasional snacks, souvenirs, beer, etc. (we are coming on a group tour where most meals and admissions are covered by the tour group).
An ATM that is part of an actual bank and banking network is fine. Let your bank know where you will be visiting so they don’t cut you off. I like airport ATM’s because it’s not on the open street. The exchange rates will be the same.
We each had about equivalent $100 of cash for incidentals. Many places take credit as I recall, but there were places that didn’t. I like having local currency and not be stuck.
Many people think that their ATM withdrawal amount should be in the hundreds. But it is fine to withdraw simply what you need. Even maybe 20€. Locals do not withdraw hundreds, do they! See what the increments for withdrawal lower limits are. If it does go as low as 20€, why not?
If you have a card that reimburses for ATM fees it is of no consequence that you withdraw in smaller increments. Therefore you can get only what you need when you need it.
We just spent May in the Czech Republic. I'd say 98% of the time we used a credit card. If we were not sure at a specific location, we would ask before purchasing or ordering.
I haven't been in Czechia since 2018, at which time I managed (with a bit of difficulty) to find no-fee ATMs, so I didn't mind making multiple, small withdrawals. I like small bills, so unless I found an ATM that allowed me to choose a mix of small denominatons, I'd withdraw less then 500 CZK to avoid receiving any 500 CZK notes.
