My husband and I went out of our way to view the "Slav Epic" painting series, on the strength of Rick Steves's recommendations in his 2016 Pocket Guide, but the exhibit is in Tokyo now. We were disappointed, needless to say, and want to warn other readers that the recommendation is out of date. We did visit the Mucha Museum, and learned more about the paintings. I hope to see them sometime, because it was a fascinating project.
A good reminder to check for more recent guidebooks, check the "guidebook updates" section of this website, and perhaps look at the attraction's own website. However, it's good that you weren't depending on an even earlier guidebook which would have directed you to a location far outside Prague.
Sad that you missed the exhibit, which is excellent.
Location far outside Prague was Moravsky Krumlov. Slav Epic was exhibited in a local chateau. But now nobody goes to Moravsky Krumlov and everybody goes to Cesky Krumlov.
After Tokyo exhibit is supposed to go to China and after that (I read somewhere) to the USA.
Your post gives me the opportunity to remind people to check the guidebook updates on this site. Guidebooks go out of date quickly, so it is a good idea to read the updates before leaving home. I am sorry you had to miss something you had looked forward to seeing.
that is the advantage of forum like this , real up to date info. The Mucha epic and its move has been discussed several times on this forum and I have made comments each time. I have been lucky enough to see the Epic twice and it is a stunning piece of art work but then I am in Prague several time a year.
there has been talk of a permanent exhibition space to be built for it in Prague but no final decision has yet been made.
Ai Wei Wei's Law of the Journey is in the exhibition space where the Slav Epic used to be. It is well worth checking out instead.
thanks for that Marcus I might go and see it when I am in Prague for the New year period.
We knew the Slav Epic paintings were not to be seen at the other museum, but still went to the Mucha Museum. I guess I am not as much of a fan of the art deco style as I thought. My other issue is that a lot of the works seemed very faded and faint. My somewhat jaded advice for the Mucha would be, before you buy your ticket, go in the museum store. If you don't like what you see, don't bother. If you do, go ahead and buy a ticket, but realize that the prints on the wall of the gift shop are much more vivid than the ones on display.
The Slav Epic is back in Prague, no China or USA trip is actual. Now the experts will check the paintings and the mayor will decide where to place this big jobb. So the only thing is Mucha Museum with posters, the Municipal House or st. Vitus Cathedral (some of the pics are here: https://www.prague-cool-guide.com/single-post/2016/05/12/Mucha-art-deco-and-Prague)
