I am interested in walking from Prague to Vienna (or vice versa) on the Greenway trail. There are ways to do self-guided tours by paying a company, but I'm wondering if it's feasible to plan this myself. Is anyone familiar with this trail, or has anyone done this? I would love any information you can offer.
How much time do you have? Is luggage transport your main question? Or will you pack light enough to carry your own gear? I see a fair number of maps and resources online, as well as at least one tour company that lists their hotel locations online for you to copy. I also see mention that some typical distances between stops are more appropriate by bike than foot, if doing the whole route. Of course, you could mix in a train or bus.

I have cycled sections of the Greenway in two separate trips. It is allegedly designed as a cycleway, but we experienced sections that we practically impassible by bicycle. It seemed that the decision to approve it as a cycleway was made at a desk, rather than in the saddle. I don't imagine that you'll have a problem walking it, except that in certain sections you'll be walking along a well-established bike path and there will be bikes everywhere.
In terms of carrying your gear, pack lightly, and then pack lighter again. You will almost certainly overpack. I walked 900km on the Camino de Santiago in January / February 2016. I overpacked, and jettisoned a load of stuff 300km in. Unfortunately, you won't find anything like the Camino-style cheap accommodation. On the Camino you could budget 25 euro a day for food and accommodation. Unfortunately, the Greenway isn't set up with alburges, so you'll be looking at penzions and hotels, so I would budget 50 - 70 euro a day for food and accommodation.
