I would like to visit Prague by myself in December. I am a 66 year-old female. Is it a safe city or should I wait until I can go with someone?
Hello Terry, I did Prague by myself a few years ago. I was 41 at the time. I found it to feel safe but made sure I was following the golden rules of safety basics. If you regularly travel solo, you'll know your own safety basics. I even rented a car and drove into Seiffen, Germany and back one day. Terrifying but exhilarating all at the same time. The city felt clean, safe and generally friendly enough for introverted me. I enjoyed the Living Prague walking tour of Old Town and the Jewish Quarter. The owner/guide, Jason, was lovely and very generous with his time and recommendations. Whenever you decide to go, enjoy it!
I travelled solo twice in Prague (2018, 2019) and felt perfectly safe both times. Both visits were in October, so it was dark by dinner; I still felt very comfortable, with basic precautions, being out in the tourist areas where there were still a lot of people.
I have been to Prague several times - just not by myself yet. However I would have no qualms traveling there alone as a female about your age. I would just keep my eyes open when out late (which I actually DID do alone in December).
Edit * and I second the recommendation for a tour with Jason.
It's a safe walkable city. If you are concerned about public transport at night etc then stay central in the Old Town or Republic Square areas and you'll be able to walk to most places. As Points and Miles said, if you are used to travelling alone then it's the same precautions here. I would add to avoid any parks at night and the quieter parts of the riverside. Drink sensibly! Really, you have more risk of tripping over cobble stones than being affected by crime.
Oh and those cobblestones can be slippery when wet!
I loved both of my walking tours with Jason! He showed me things that I just hadn't seen on my own and his enthusiasm got me interested in learning more about them.
It's very safe. As usual in Europe, beware of pickpockets.
Walking is good, as it's a really pretty city. I like the former Jewish ghetto for its history. Walk up to the castle. I don't know how much the national museum is as I was there on a free day, but I recommend it. It's at the very end of Wenceslas Square. The bell tower (can't remember the church name, but it's in old town) was terrifying to me (I have a strange fear of heights in some situations - that was one) but most would enjoy climbing up and taking in the views. There is a cost but it's not high. EDIT: the church is St Nicholas Cathedral. Next to it is a Starbucks which is a fantastic people-watching spot!
I found a lot of attractions in Prague aren't free, and I used all my koruna over my four days, which was a bit longer than I needed to stay. Watch out for the Roma, especially at the train station. My favourite area was Wenceslas Square (Václavské námèsti) and the area across the river from old town, Kampa Island.
