traveler's insurance

I was researching something regarding the trip to Prague, some are saying that it is mandatory to purchase traveler's insurance. There are some police/inspecting personnel can give you a fine for not purchasing the traveler's insurance. Is that true? I can not find any detailed info but gathering info from different blogger warning others. is this a scam?

this comes up on many travel forums, yes it is mandatory to have insurance to cover you for medical emergency but the chance of you being ask to prove it is close to zero.
Check with your embassy travel to Czech republic page for full advice,my advice is to make sure you have at least medical cover and proof of it just in case you need to use it, medical evacuation insurance is also a good idea.
As an EU citizen (for the moment)I get reciprocal health care in any EU country I travel to but I also take out annual travel insurance to cover for all the usual things you need to cover whilst travelling including 3rd party problems and of course medical evacuation.

Of course it is good to have insurance, I always had it, then I found it's much cheaper to buy health insurance for foreigners in Prague then here. Nobody ever asked for it. Once when I was there I had head injury and needed stitches and some exam. At that time I had insurance bought here in the US. So I paid cash for everything including ambulance. It was about $25. I did not even bother to submit it to insurance. If it had happened here I would have paid more in copayment.

The first time I purchased travel insurance was for a trip to Prague, Budapest, and Krakow. I was never asked to prove that I had it during my travels. Ever since that trip (2006), I have purchased travel insurance when I leave the country. It is just a good idea. I've never had to use it.

Along with medical coverage most travel insurance policies include medical evacuation insurance - that is probably the most important coverage - med evac can tun 50k plus. Another coverage is repatriation of remains and there are many other coverages from travel delay to lost luggage. Check out https://www.insuremytrip.com/

Thank you all for great advices. It is good to know. Just i was researching, i have read many of the companies actually give hard time reimbursing medical expenses. Trip interruption expenses and so on. Also, my credit card company provides some what insurance along with purchases of travel related expenses. I think I should get it just because i will be traveling first time to europe with my family for a month on our own without a tour group.
