We are going on a Danube cruise in October and will be disembarking at Passau. We then want to spend several day in Prague on our own. What’s the best way to get from Passau to Prague? Rent a car or train?
Always the train. To rent a car in one country and return it in another will be very pricey. Plus - train travel is so easy and scenic and it's the way Europeans travel.
It looked like one would have to transfer/switch trains at least twice and it would take 7 hours. (???) so might be worth the expense to rent a car. I don’t know for sure. What do you all think?
Quickest way is one change with train back to Linz, then change to a train to Prague. 5 hours and 10 minutes.
Or a train to Regensburg, then change to a train to Prague. 5 hours and 47 minutes.
Prague based companies will charge @U$300 to pick up 2 people from Passau. Journey time door-to-door is @3.5hrs. So when you calculate your train and Prague transport costs plus not worrying how you'll get from the station to your hotel etc then it may be worth it.
“Prague based company” is like a taxi/ride service?
Yes, it's basically a taxi service. It will be priced on the vehicle, distance and number of people so Passau/Vilshofen for 2-3 people with luggage works out to U$300. I'll PM you an option. Just compare the prices and although the taxi service will be more than public transport it will remove most of the headaches.
Thanks so much!
