Is it easy to find a taxi at the airport? Are fares standard or negotiated? Are there any tips to make sure a new student is being charged fairly? Should she reserve transportation ahead of time?
Go to Rome2Rio.com. That site will give you approximate costs and travel time, with directions, from the airport to where you want to go.
Thanks for the site! Very helpful. One option it suggested is Uber...is that actually in Prague and has anyone had any experience with it there?
TaxiFareFinder should give you a good idea of the fare.
Insist on the metered rate. Here's the description from Rick's Prague guidebook. The same page (p. 266 or check the airport web site) also describes three cheaper services that just drop you at a central point in the city.
Expensive: Catch a taxi. Cabbies wait at the curb directly in front of the arrival hall. Or book a yellow AAA taxi through their office in the airport hall--you’ll get a 50 percent discount coupon for the trip back (book your return trip by calling 222-333-222). AAA taxis wait in front of exit D at Terminal 1 and exit E at Terminal 2 (metered rate, generally 500-600 Kč to downtown).
Or I can recommend local company. Price 550czk www.Prague-airport-transport.co.uk
You can prebook online...
where do you need to go,public transport from the airport is very cheap and efficient, let me know exactly where you need to go and I can advise but if you have a lot of luggage go for a private shuttle as suggested.

this is the company I used when I am loaded down with bags or have an early or late flight.otherwise I use public transport.
Loads of options, as discussed above. However if she is a student, she may wish to avail of the public transport as a single taxi fare will cost the same as an entire month's public transport pass, so she may as well start figuring out how to use the transport. Transport is how people who actually live in Prague move around our city and it's the best way of getting a feel for the place. The system is extensive, safe, fast and reliable. Also, you know that you're not going to get ripped off by a taxi driver. (Czechs don't use taxis, so the taxi drivers prey upon gullible tourists).
You can find the public transport journey planner here. Simply fill in the fields i.e. airport and the final address in Prague, and the system will figure out the best way of getting there.
I hope this helps.

In response to your Uber question- I have used Uber quite extensively in Prague, and have found it very reliable. I use it frequently to go to and from the airport if I have a lot of luggage and don't want wrestle it onto the tram and metro. I also use it to come home after going to the bars if I'm too impatient to wait for a night tram. Otherwise though, public transport is the way to go.
Uber is great in Prague. It's cheaper than the taxis. A driver we had said he drives for Uber full time.
I'm sitting at the Prague airport right now after spending three days here. Both to and from my hotel from the airport I used Prague Airport Transfers( http://www.prague-airport-transfers.co.uk/home/airport-transfer-types/shared-shuttles/ ). They were very efficient and very cheap. They dropped me off exactly at my hotel doorstep in old town for 290 CZK per ride. I'd recommend them. For the price I also did their free Prague City Tour, to which they give you a voucher when they drop you off. The four hour tour was pretty extensive and interesting. They provide this walking tour in hopes that you'll sign up for one of their other tours or services, but there is no obligation or pressure to do so. Safe travels!
take a taxi. Our fare to the airport was about $4.50 usd. The ride takes about 25 minutes as there is not a highway to downtown Prague. If you flag down a taxi, they could charge you any amount. Just have one called, use the internet to order one up, or use a stand. They use meters mostly.
I think you might have mixed up your USD to CZK rate there: the average taxi fare to the airport from the city centre is about 600czk which is about $25 USD, not $4.50!
