I’m looking for clarification on taking the train from Regensburg to Prague, following a river cruise in 2025. I know there is also a bus option, that may be shorter travel time, but I think our group of 6 would prefer to take the train if it’s relatively straightforward. Thanks.
See www.bahn.de for schedules and prices. However you will not yet find schedules for 2025. You can assume they will be similar to what exists now.
When you are ready to book train tickets, I suggest you do it through the Czech train system, cd.cz. Same train, but half the price. Also, you can reserve your seats for free on the Czech system.
I’ve been on the cd.cz site based on prior recommendations to go there over the German site. But so far I’ve not been able to figure how to price, buy or reserve seats (understanding that 2025 is not yet available). I must be missing something, probably obvious, but so far unable to crack the secret code?! :). I’ll keep trying!
Update for anyone who cares or might have similar question….tickets are very reasonable on cd.cz website, as noted by previous responder. A couple of important details that might be useful to know……tickets are available for purchase at 90 days advance. Maximum number of tickets per web transaction is 5. So if you need more than 5 will have to do multiple purchases. The ticket purchase does NOT include an assigned seat. If you want to purchase assigned seat “reservation only” those are available at 45 days out (go figure) at additional minimal cost. If you do not purchase the reservation, then you will take your chance with “available” seats or may have to stand!! Not good for a 4 hour trip to Prague. The Czech rail customer service center was very responsive and patient to address all my questions, even if their website is a bit lacking or ambiguous on some of those details. Or maybe I missed them.
The ticket purchase does NOT include an assigned seat.
That would be an unwelcome novelty. For the current timetable period, the CD website still says for every direct train from Munich to Prague: "Free reservation" (the problem with this is, however, that these reservations are often only assigned with a deadline of four weeks). Has the Czech rail customer service told you that this rule will be abolished?
I was confused by the same language on the website, which is why I started what turned out to be a lengthy back and forth with the customer service folks. I did not specifically ask about the “free reservation” website language. But I did have them walk me thru the process that I documented above, so I’m not sure if there is a disconnect or maybe I just didn’t ask the right questions. In any event I’m comfortable purchasing tickets at 90 days and adding reservations at 45 so I stopped there. Sorry.
@davidW We are going from Regensburg to Prague after the river cruise in Nov. I have been on cz site and I can pull some ticket prices if I pick a date that is within 90 days. Are you saying that even if I make reservation with my ticket purchase, the reservation only last 45 days? That is, the earliest I can buy ticket with seats is 45-day in advance of trip?
Thanks.
@ccclement. That’s how I understand the explanation I got from the cz customer service folks (who were very helpful and responsive). You can purchase tickets at 90 days out and assigned seat reservation at 45 days out. So you would have both a ticket to board AND an assigned seat. Or you could wait for 45 days out and purchase both at the same time. Seems odd but that seems to be the explanation I got from customer service. You could try emailing and confirming. Let me know if you learn differently.
