Have anyone rode train 2nd class? I saw that the price difference between 1st and second class is absurd, Eur 19 vs. EUR 101 something. I need to get a feel of how 2nd class train is since i cannot find image from google. Thanks.
Go to seat61.com and select Germany from the list of countries in the left panel. Then keep scrolling down for pictures of various German train carriages. Do likewise for the Czech Republic and any other country your proposed train will travel through if you're not sure exactly which country the train(s) will belong to.
I think you'll be very pleased with the second-class carriages.
For info about trains from Prague, including lots of photos, see here: https://seat61.com/international-trains/trains-from-Prague.htm
Second class is 2+2 seating, first class is 1+2. 2nd class is perfectly adequate unless somebody else is paying,or the upgrade is cheap.
The rest of the above website is the best source of info about travelling by train.
Thank you guys for the quick response.
First class cost 50% more and it's not necessary. Second class is plenty good. Go to http://www.idos.cz . You can switch it to English. Connection is not very good (4 to 5 changes, it takes over 5 or 6 hours depending on which connection you choose). If you buy tickets for the end of May it cost 2208 czk, for end of June 438 czk. In US$ 91.13, resp. 18.07. Czech website is probably the cheapest to buy tickets.
All of those 19 EUR fares I'm seeing start with the DB bus from Prague to Nuremberg, which is only one class, then regional trains connecting to Rothenburg which are mostly 2nd class, 1st class would be overkill on these. 2nd class is perfectly fine.
The 19€ fare is an advance purchase, "train" specific, non-refundable ticket (it's only valid on that date and time). Actually it's a bus, not a train, from Prague to Nürnberg. If you are also ticketed for an IC from Nürnberg, the ticket is only valid for that specific train. If the ticket includes any regional trains, you are free to use any regional train on that route that day.
The 1st class fare is probably an open ticket, usable any time, on that route.
You can also purchase a Czech ticket to Furth im Wald, Germany, in Prague for about 10 euro in Czech Koruna. Take one of the direct ALX trains that goes Prague to Munich for 25 euro (for 1 person). After you get over the border into Germany, buy a Bayern-Ticket from the conductor for euro go to Nürnberg with a change at Schwandorf, then go from Nürnberg to Rothenburg. All of your travel after Furth would be covered by the Bayern-Ticket. There is no specific train requirement for these tickets.
You could also buy a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket online and use it on the ALX train from Pilsen to Rothenburg. You would still need a Czech ticket from Prague to Pilsen for about 4 euro in Czech Koruna.
All, thank you so much for your input. I finally got the train ticket from go euro website, which led me to DB. It will have five transfers, Praha to Cheb, then Cheb to Nurnberg, Nurnberg to Ansbach, Ansbach to Steinach, and Steinach to Rotherburg Odt.
What worried me now is we only have 4 mins on the last two transfers, Ansbach and Steinach. I know we have to stand by the door and get ready to move fast to the next train in these stations. It would be superb if anyone with train experience could give me tips on how to look for the next train fast at the station.
Well they are always about 4 minutes at Steinach because they are timed that way. The train will be waiting for you at the station and will not leave until everybody makes the transfer. It is 4 minutes because in their long experience, that is how long it takes. The train just shuttles back and forth between Rothenburg and Steinach all day long.
The transfer at Ansbach is a cross platform change. You get off the train and walk 20 feet to the train on the opposite side of the platform. 4 minutes is perfect.
The train ride from Steinach to Rothenburg is only 11 minutes. If you should miss it for some reason, the next one is in 1 hour.
Here are the station layouts for Ansbach and Steinach.
If you look up Nuernberg to Rothenburg odT on the Bahn website, you'll see that the change in Ansbach is from track 2 to track 3, cross platform per the station layout. The change in Steinach will be from track 2 to track 5. You'll have to go through the tunnel, but everyone will be doing the same thing; just stay with the herd.
Thank you so much.
