train/bus from Prague to Munich

In mid April we will be traveling from Prague to Munich on a Sunday. Should we opt for train or bus? Do the buses and trains run fairly often on Sundays?

Many thanks

Debbi,

What you can do if you choose is to look at the train schedule and see how often they run. I did the train from Munich to Prague this past September and just use the online calendar (@ bahn.com) to check for departures on the days/dates i was favoring. just plug and chug info as if you were going to buy a ticket.

Just a note, you wont be able to buy until 3 or 4 months away from your choosen day. its just they way they do things. If you want to get an idea on how much you can pay if you buy sooner vs later just plug in some dates tomorrow and 3 or 4 months out and see the price difference. Some of the trains wont be that full but since i have no idea on how full they will or wont be i buy my tickets in advance. but i plan my trips and travel days.

If you look at bahn.com you can get an idea on times.

again, i used the train not the bus. Good luck.

happy trails.

The German railways (DB site above) operate that bus route and sell tickets for either bus or train. Buses run more frequently and a bit faster than the direct train options. I would choose whichever departure and arrival times suit you best. The bus ticket is reserved when you buy it, since it doesn't have as much space as a train.

It's somewhat a question of time vs cost and flexibility.

You can get a bus ticket starting at 29€/person (58€ for two people) with advance purchase (3 to 90 days in advance). The tickets come with a reservation but are only valid for the specified bus (miss that bus, the tickets are worthless). There are five buses per day, and they take about 4H40M.

OTOH, there are four regional trains per day direct from Prague to Munich; the connection takes 6 hours. Prague to Pilsen will cost about 3,60€/person for a Czech ticket to Pilsen. A 30,50€ for a two person Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket will take you from Pilsen to Munich, total less than 40€ for two. If you can't figure out how to purchase the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket online, it is easier to buy a regular 2 person Bayern-Ticket online for 27€ for two. That will cover you from Fürth im Wald, the first station in Germany to Munich. Czech tickets to Fürth will be about 10€/person, about 47€, total, for two people. Either way, tickets can be purchased up to time of departure and are fully flexible. The trains are all regional; there are no reserved seats.
