Thanks for your question.
Simple answer: A tour suits me best.
Longer answer: I am a 52 year old female solo traveler. I have traveled a fair amount in my home country using planes and cars. I have been to Europe twice. The first trip was with CIE tours to Ireland. Tour made sense, first trip to Europe, not the best public transportation in Ireland. Second trip was to Scandinavia. Easy countries to visit, almost no language barrier. For this trip I chose a RSE tour. More independence, better guides. I spent an extra day and a half in the starting city of Stockholm (very easy to do of course). During the tour there was a lot of free time to fill, which was also easy for me to do. After the ending city of Bergen, I flew to Copenhagen and took a train to Ystad, Sweden to spend a few days. Then returned by train to Copenhagen to fly home. Everything went great, however, I had a lot of anxiety during the travel days. I am sure with more experience I will get more comfortable. During my American life I have almost no experience with a large bus or train station (even in English). The only disadvantage I found to the RSE tour was that I was physically exhausted after the trip. I also would have preferred a tad more free time and longer stays. (But then what would I have been willing to give up for the longer time in certain places?) After I was rested and reviewed my trip I found that the huge advantages of stress free travel with the amazing historical and cultural education I received from Asa, the tour guide, outweighs any disadvantage.
I am attempting more independent activities with every trip. But, I want the guides and company of the tour. For 2019, in addition to the tour I plan on visiting one Czech and one Slovak village. My husband's grandfather is from Cicmany. Then I plan to add a few days in Paris (first visit) before coming home. Who knows, maybe in 2020 I will go completely on my own.
