stopping in Terezin

We will be stopping in Terezin on our way from Berlin to Prague in June. We will be using MyDayTrip that has gotten good reviews on this board. Wondering how long a stop we should make? Would a few hours be enough for some touring? Not sure if our driver would give us a tour or we need to arrange a tour there?

There are two "parts" to Terezin. There's the fortress about a km outside the walled town. I would estimate an hour to tour it. It was used as a prison, mostly for politcal prisoners, many were executed there and there's a cemetery. It was not, however, a death camp.

The other "part" is the walled town. There are several museums inside. I would allow at least 3-4 hours. In both parts, there were full explanations in English. At the fortress, a guided tour was offered, which I skipped, but a couple who got there at the same time opted for it. This was 9 years ago.

It depends on the detail you are looking for. We spent about an hour at the fortress and about 3 hours in the walled city. No tour for us. We read up on it before we went there and then gathered more information at the sites themselves.

We spend the whole day and it was one of the most impactful things we've ever done with our teenagers. We had a private guide named Pavel through Terizin Private Tours (https://terezin-private-tours.com/). He's a historian and provided insight about both sites, the country and culture during the 1930's and 40's. Our family is from the Sudetenland and we appreciated learning about what life would have been like for them during that time.
If you are traveling with kids, consider hiring Pavel as a private guide. His stories really put the whole war into context for us and my kids have a much better understanding of what happened as a result. Here's my review just after our tour:

Good luck!!

We used the same tour service - Terezin Private Tours and we were well-pleased with the guide. They came to our hotel to pick us up and deliver us when complete. We left mid morning, toured one part of Terezin; ate lunch at a local restaurant; toured 2nd part of Terezin; and then they returned us to our hotel by 4-5 pm. Very informative, impactful. Don't miss the museum - it adds much to your visit.
