We have about 3 days to explore outside Prague and are considering renting a car vs. hiring a small group or private guide. Cesky Krumlov seems like a must do, we’d want to spend a night vs. a full day tour, don’t want to be on a tour bus. Ideas for a second stop, not too far from Prague? How is renting a car in Prague?
We did a small group day tour to Cesky Krumlov from Prague. I think there were 7 people in our group. We did a castle tour, walking tour and had lunch in a traditional restaurant. Most people just slept in the van on the way back to Prague.
Kutna Hora.and Tabor are both historic towns that played very different roles in Czech history. Each is a little more than one hour by train from Prague.
Olomouc, in Moravia, is yet another city steeped in Czech history and has been described as a “miniature Prague.” Olomouc is about 2.5 hours from Prague by train.
I'd drive as renting in CZ is not complicated. My personal favourites down there are to stop in Tabor for lunch but not stay there. I continue down and head towards the Jindrichuv Hradec area where I've stayed at the little Bila Pani hotel. To the east of Jindrichuv Hradec you have the UNESCO listed town of Telč. Come back to Jindichuv Hradec and go south leads you to the lakes around Trebon and from there to the regional centre called Ceske Budejovice. Then from CB you have the quick hop to Cesky Krumlov. So my choice for second night would be Jindrichuv Hradec then the following day, couple of hours in Telč, couple of hours in Ceske Budejovice and get into CK that evening.
Thanks so much, Jason-this is perfect!
