Shipping wine from Czech?

Hi- we were given a bottle of wine as a gift and can't figure out how to get it back to the states.. Is it possible to ship? We tried Fed Ex and they said they can't ship alchohol.. our flight home is on 2 different airlines and we don't think we will have enough time to get our lugage, get through customs, check the bag on the next airline in time.

Thanks,
Kara

There are lots of US rules around wine. You state may prohibit individuals receiving wine. It is possible that a local wine store could accept it. If you are on good terms with a wine store, you could try that.

I did a chat session with fedex and even gave the agent that link and she said no.. I think you have to be a licensed retailer to ship wine.

Is it worth shipping it? Shipping costs will probably exceed the value of the wine. I assume you're in the Czech Rep. now, so why not just consume it prior to leaving?

Agnes makes a good point.

Have you gone into a Mail Boxes Etc and asked?

Wines from that part of Europe tend to be inexpensive. While I realize it was a gift,it will probably cost a lot to ship. You could look for one of those special wine bags that are lined with bubble wrap and use that and put it into your checked luggage. Returning to the US,you are allowed a certain amount of alcohol. You would need to check the customs website.

I think that your problem may arise from what you originally said,

our flight home is on 2 different airlines and we don't think we will have enough time to get our lugage, get through customs, check the bag on the next airline in time.

I can't see how one bottle would make a difference in that. It sounds like you have a tight connection. Except if this is on two different tickets the second airline won't wait - or take care of you - if there is a delay or problem with the first flight.

If you had to retrieve the luggage from the first plane and re-check it on the second surely the one bottle wouldn't make a difference. You declare it, it is under the limit, you move on.

If you were 100% carry-on, that's where the problem could be.

But it sounds like your connection is too tight to me.

My understanding of the OP's post is that they are doing carryon luggage.

FedEx will not ship alcohol from private individuals. Mailboxes Etc is the same.

That leaves the other very good advice, just enjoy it locally.
