Romani Music

I will be based in SE Czechia (Mikulov), and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on finding a place to see Romani musicians? Or any local folk music for that matter.

When are you going to be there? It's wine country and you might find some wine festivals going on with music.

Will be there mid to late October. I have looked around but did not have much success for this particular topic.

acechrist, I will actually be there in two weeks. If I'm not too befuddled, I'll ask around.

acechrist, I am back now and will send you a more detailed PM later. But the short answer was that after asking several local people (hotel folks, local guides, the TI office, friendly english-speakers, and a musician) I did not identify a place where there is regular folk or Romani music in the area. I was told consistently that there are occasionally guitar-playing people at some local restaurant/bars/bowling alleys(!), they play a mix of more pop, some Czech popular songs for sing-a-long, and well known hits like Elvis and the Beatles. More of a drinking & dancing vibe. We did see one jazz club near the square. As we were told in Poland, young people mostly listen to Europop at home or clubs. We were told the old stuff can be arranged for tour groups or seen at festivals. Maybe the TI office in Mikulov can help with your specific dates. For Romani, you might have to look further like Brno area where they are more concentrated.

In general, Mikulov is the heart of wine country, and life center on that. Because of the torrential rains and flooding, the grape harvest was delayed and things were quiet as far as tourist things. Maybe back in action in October.

Hey Stan, thanks for the info! This is good to know.

I actually ended up changing my trip to another country and am postponing my trip to Czechia. I was finding that in October many of the sites I was interested in seeing in South Moravia were limiting their hours to weekends only. Seems like May thru Sept is the main tourist season there and then they begin to shut down a bit.

I found there is a Romani cultural museum in Brno, so I will probably contact them in the future for a lead on where to see music.

I hope you had a great time, and the flooding did not affect your trip.

acechrist, I just sent a PM, but you got the gist of it. I loved south Moravia, although the flooding delayed the grape harvest. Good food, good people, and scenic as anywhere I've been.
