About three hours. Mikulov is a small town close to the Austrian border. It is a town of wine. On the foot of scenic Palava hills. Nice chateau with views. What else would you like to know?

While you are in Valtice you should also visit Lednice with more beautiful chateau than Valtice, tropical greenhouse, minaret which is in a huge chateau park with many ponds connected with canals. On the way to Prague about 40 minutes from Valtice you can visit Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic. In about half way between Brno and Prague there is a small town Humpolec, right next to freeway, good stop for lunch break. I recommend pub U krale Jiriho (At King George). Good Czech food and one of the best beers -Bernard. Ales Hrdlicka Anthropologic Museum. In nearby (4 miles) Kaliste there is a birthplace house of Gustav Mahler. 8 miles from Humpolec castle Lipnice. Jaroslav Hasek wrote The Good Soldier Schweik in a Lipnice pub. His grave is in Lipnice cemetery. About 10 miles from Humpolec there is a historic town of Pelhrimov with a beautiful square and few medieval streets around the square.

There are many great wineries in and around Mikulov. And also many private wine cellars. But most of them are not like wineries in the US (California, Oregon, Washington) where they cater to the tasting public. They mostly sell wine and usually let you taste what you are buying or they organize and supply with wine and overnight get together, reunions, company parties, etc. Sometimes you can get to private cellar and ask to taste some wine but you are expected to buy few bottles. This could be difficult for non- czech speaker. Most winemakers are older guys. Young people generally speak some English. Then there are stores around the town which sell wine, so called vinoteka and you can taste there. If you want to taste top wines you can do it in so called saloon of wine which is in the cellar of Valtice chateau. Check it on this website:

Yes, Hasek's The Good Soldier Schweik is a great novel, well recommended. The story has been made into a number of movies.
