Hi there,
On my car rental agreement it says an IDL is not a requirement but is helpful. I will be picking up in Prague and dropping off in Prague and driving through Austria and Slovenia. I do not have an IDL as I have never needed one and as I am already here might be tricky to get one.
Anyone had any issues picking up a rental car with just an American DL? Thanks
Not picking up, but if you drive in Austria without an IDP and get stopped by a cop, its a big fine. If you want to use the motorways in Austria and Slovenia, you will need to buy a vignette sticker from each country and attach it to the windshield.
Here is an option to obtain in Austria from www.usembassy.gov:
"The U.S. driver's license must be accompanied by an international driver's permit (obtainable in the U.S. from AAA) or by an official translation of the U.S. driver's license, which can be obtained at one of the Austrian automobile clubs (ÖAMTC or ARBÖ )."
https://www.oeamtc.at/standorte/ (locations, it appears they also sell the vignettes).
Looks like I can get an IDL online from a couple of companies all with good reviews from TrustPilot and they are digital. Seems the cost is about $20 so I will do that. Thank you.
