Recommended day trips from Prague in December

I will be in Prague Dec 6-12 to check out the city for the first time and also the Christmas markets. We want to stay in Prague as our home base and want to take short day trips by train or bus. Do you recommend any day trips close to Prague such as Dresden, etc? Also, do you recommend Dresden (I think read it is an hour and 45 minute bus trip)? Thank you for any information on travel tips with organizing 1-2 days trips from Prague.

Also, I have a 55 minute lay over in Amsterdam to catch my flight to Prague. Do you think that is enough time and any tips to make sure I catch my flight to Prague on time?

Hi from Wisconsin,

You will be in Prague, one of the most beautiful cities in the world for 6 days. It is untouched by war since 1630. And you want to get out and ride a train to go somewhere else?! Oh, my.

South of Prague is Konopiste Castle. You can read about it. A private car hire will take you there, wait for you to tour, and take you back to Prague.

Prague is more than the clock tower. There is a book by Ivana Edwards named, Prague Walks. Available on eBay I would highly recommend it. It will take you to the regular places but via unusual paths. Plus there are walks that tourists normally miss. Don't miss the cemetery at Sts. Peter and Paul Church.

By the way Dresden, you do know we bombed the living daylights out of that city. Not because it was militarily important but because it was beautiful and we were...well, very angry. It is famous for our fire bombing. Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut is a description of what it was like to come out of a butchering cave after the firebombing. He was there during the bombing as a prisoner of war. What you look at today is all reconstructed. Those are not old buildings. They just look like it. Prague is REAL.

Read up about art nouveau before you visit Prague. Make sure to get in side the Municipal Building.

Some popular day trips from Prague include Czesky Krumlov (we went overnight, but in winter, it might not be as busy---I don't know), Brno, Kutna Hora (including the bone church), and Konipiste (castle). A castle we really liked, though, was Castle Hluboka. It looks like a Disney castle.

We took Lobo Shuttle to Czesky Krumlov and asked for "castle stops" on the way. (We booked a private shuttle.) We stopped at both Castle Hluboka and Divci Kamen (a 14th C castle ruin near Czesky Krumlov.) Then we spent the night at Pension Lobo in CK (there's a discount on the shuttle if you are staying at the pension). To do all of that would be an overnight trip, though, especially in winter.

The key to answering that question is your answer to to this question -- One ticket?

make sure I catch my flight to Prague on time

"make sure"? Nothing is sure. I go through AMS fairly often. 55 minutes means hope your flight is not late arriving, hope you get a gate and not a bus from the tarmac, be seated in the front of the plane, walk briskly and not care if there is no space left in the overhead on the next flight.
