I have read that you do not have to have a ticket to ride public transportation in Prague if you are over 70 years old, even if you are a tourist. Does anyone know if this is true?
Prague buses, trams, and metro are free for riders over 65. You must provide approved ID if asked. For non EU visitors, that ID would be a passport.
Do you know if it’s free for those over 70 going from the airport to Prague or just in the city?
Travel is free from the airport if you catch a scheduled bus but not if you catch the AirPort Express. The Express is not a PID service.
If you don’t want to carry your passport there is a fairly simple procedure to get a PID card for 60 krona. You need to take your passport and two passport sized photos to a major metro station.i did mine at Andel and it took five minutes. There’s a Photo Booth in the station. Other venues are listed here

Worth noting that being over 70 doesn’t exempt you from paying 25 krona for large luggage, defined as being larger than 25x45x70 cm. This needs its own ticket.
The previous comments are spot on, as a regular traveler to Prague and now 70 years old I have been able to get free transport for a number of years, I have the PID card that Alan mentions but just not worth it if visiting for a few days, just carry your passport with you, actually carrying your passport as a visitor is a legal requirement but the likely hood of you needing to show it is very slim.
Alan mentions the Luggage ticket and it is required if you bag is larger than he mentions , the tickets are easy to buy at the airport either at the machines in the main foyer or at the bus stops, also available at the transpprt stall in the main foyer. Remember to stamp it either before you get on the bus or actually on the bus there are yelloe machines to do that. If you look your age you are very unlikely to be asked for ID and i have been on various transports where the inspectors just ignore me and recently went to pull my ID out and the inspector just shook his head as I went to show it to him.
Alaso if using the trains you can get a 25% discount if ovder 65.
If travelling to other cities in the country then you also get free transport is some of them certainly Brno and Ceske Budejovice, both places i have been to in the last few months .
@unclegus. The info is spot on because it’s what you told me several years ago! Your advice all worked perfectly so I thought I’d pass it on.
Thanks again
Alan
glad my info was useful to you and you passed it on.The Public transport system in Prague and indeed the whole of the Czech Republic is superb, I spend 40-50 days a year in the country and use public transport extensively
I would to thank everyone for their very useful and informative comments.
