Has anyone traveled to Prague with a toddler? If so, how was your experience? I'm also considering either heading to Gorlitz and Berlin or to Budapest on this same trip. Would either routes be doable with a 2 1/2 year old? Thanks.
I visited both Gorlitz and Berlin in 2015. They are relatively flat places, which would be good, but Berlin sprawls all over the place. You'd be using the U-Bahn and S-Bahn a lot, and I remember walking up and down stairs in the stations. I had no particular need to avoid them, so I didn't look around for an alternative. I love Berlin, but I'm not sure it's ideal with a toddler. However, you're probably more likely to find child-friendly activities in a large city. Berlin has a zoo, for example
I don't know how much Gorlitz has in the way of public transportation, should you need it. The historic area is fairly manageable in size, but not small (that's one of the great things about Gorlitz), and I remember a bit of a walk from the train station.
What time of year is your trip? Do you plan to travel by train or by car?
never had kids and never travelled with kids but this link may be useful to you.
Thanks so much for your thoughts acraven! I will be visiting in late June and need to travel entirely by train/bus. I do not want to have to bring a car seat.
Unclegus, the info you sent is very helpful. Thanks!
We were in Berlin, Gorlitz and Prague in August.
I agree that while Berlin is great, it might be a little daunting with a 2 and a half year old. We left our three young kids at home with family!
But Gorlitz would be a lot more doable with a young one. Like was said, it's small, very walkable, and comparatively quiet. We loved it and plan to go back next year. Getting around is really easy. From the train station you can catch a tram into the Old Town stopping near the Obermarkt/Untermarkt. Might have to walk a little but not bad. We definitely would recommend staying in the Untermarkt. We had a great experience at the Hotel Borse. Short walk to the river and the Polish border. Great cafes along the river. Gorlitz has a zoo although we didn't go there. Just a gorgeous, charming little town, off the beaten path and different.
To get there we took train from Berlin, by way of Cottbus. Think it was about 3 hours or so, with that transfer in Cottbus. After Gorlitz went to Dresden, which was also great, (train from Gorlitz about an hour and a half) and then train to Prague, which I think was about 3-4 hours.
Prague is amazing but I shudder to think about tackling that with our 2 year old!

We took our 3 and 4 year olds to Prague and Budapest and had a great time. We took all local transit / walked while in the cities. Our favourite of the two with kids was Budapest - market, circus, zoo, river cruise to Szentendre and Szechenyi baths mixed in with the historical sights we wanted to see. We found the Frommer's Budapest guide by Ryan James (2010) to be very kid-focused. Stayed on the Buda side, which involved a big climb every night, so plan that carefully (we ditched the stroller!)
