We will probably be visiting Prague on our upcoming trip mostly focusing on Germany coming up late August into middle of September. One itinerary I have in mind might see us reaching Prague the weekend of Aug 30, Sept 1, and my question is would it be better to alter things so that I would be somewhere else like Dresden for that weekend and visit Prague midweek, just in terms of crowds in general, or at that time of year can one assume it will be pretty crowded any day of the week.
It is VERY crowd most of the time in the summer. It will slightly less so during the week. Will you notice it ??? Probably not. Work the schedule that best fits your time and just deal with the crowds. Last time we were there in mid-Dec, snowy, and in the mid teen -- a cold, damp time. And you still could not walk across Charles bridge.
It will be busy though many of the locals disappear into the countryside in the summertime at weekends but the tourist hoards will still be there .Prague really does not have a quiet period apart from maybe February and November.
I will be in Prague for a couple of weeks in August leaving on the 30th but will be spending very little time in the main tourist areas.
Understand that no matter where you go Sundays are the day everything's closed or on restricted hours. I like Sunday mornings because I know I can take photos of places without anybody walking through them.
Just to note that Sundays are restricted if you want things like banks, supermarkets and businesses outside the central district which mostly trade mon-fri but actually more of the tourist places are closed on Mondays. So my advice is to avoid Mondays. And visit the Castle after lunch because most of the big groups get there in the mornings.
If you want to visit the Jewish sights, know that they are only open till around 1 pm on Friday and closed on Saturday, so they are extremely crowded on Sunday because of the "backlog."
I think that a visit to Prague is good even on weekdays, the main thing is not Monday, on Monday most tourist places such as museums and the like are closed, and on weekdays you just need to clarify the work schedule. I was in Prague at the weekend, everything worked, my friend and I had a wonderful time during the day walking around the city and in the evening we found entertainment for ourselves having been on a tantric massage, I recommend visiting this after a hard day on my feet, this is what you need to relax.
