Prague, Vienna and Salzburg in 9 days?

We are flying into Prague on June 22nd and out on July 1st. In addition to seeing Prague, we were thinking about going to Vienna and maybe Salzburg. Is this too much to do in 9 days?

Are the train rides interesting enough in and of themselves to be worth it?

If it is doable, any thoughts about the best route?

Have you already booked your flights? If not, I'd recommend flying into Prague and then home through Salzburg. Yes, I think 3 nights in each city is a good plan. We did Prague/Vienna/Budapest with 3 nights in each place. The train rides are pretty - going through countryside. If you wanted to do your plan, I'd do Prague/Vienna/Salzburg in that order. If you have already books flights in and out of Prague, I'd probably reconsider doing both Vienna and Salzburg, just pick one, as that would be quite a lot of backtracking via train. Just my two cents.

Direct trains between Prague-Vienna (4.25 hours) and Vienna-Salzburg (2.5 hours) are direct and served by the newest RailJet trains. In comparison, the fastest Prague-Salzburg trains take 6.25 hours with a connection at Linz. How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.

If plan to do the full circle by train, then the Central Europe Triangle Pass covers those particular trips for $140.
