Is there any way to get to Rothenburg from Prague without taking the 8-hour train ride. Car rentals seem to be very expensive for a one-way trip.
There is usually a very high fee when crossing borders with a rental car, as someone has to drive it back.
Have a great trip!
It is the drop fee in another country that is killing. Have you looked at any of the discount airlines. If you don't want the train, the airline is you only serious alternative.
Unfortunately there are no flights to Rothenburg. You have to fly into Frankfurt or possibly Munich then train or bus from there. I'll have to check on the time it would take, not to mention the expense. We only have a short time in Rothenburg so didn't want to take the whole day getting there.
A friend of mine asked if there is any ride shares. She was able to pay a reasonable fee to someone going to her destination. She said it was through a company that set people up.
And airlines won't save you any time. Stuttgart and Nuremberg are closest, but require connecting flights, and then you would still need to catch a train the rest of the way.
If you managed a nonstop flight to Munich (1 hr flight), you could rent a car and drive the rest of the way in around 3 hours. But your total travel time from airport arrival in Prague to parking in Rothenberg would be close to 7 hours.
Unfortunately the answer is no. No matter the transportation, it is a 7-8 journey.
If you're just trying to go to Rothenburg to check off a "sight", don't. It's very nice, but not worth 8 hours travel for a few hours visit. I'd rather spend the time in Pilsen than fight the issues with traveling to RodT.
