Is there a direct train route to Krakow, Poland from Prague? EuRail map doesn't show service to Krakow.
There's no direct train that I know of. It's a long (6+ hrs) train ride with usually 2 stops. I just did it in July, it's a pain in the patuti, but I prefer trains to buses and couldn't find any budget flights.
Edit: when I said 2 stops, I meant 2 train changes - there are many stops along the way.
There is a direct train but that is an overnight train. Otherwise you have to change trains twice: in Ostrava and Katowice. Trains make many more than just two stops between Prague and Krakow. Train Prague-Ostrava stops on the way 4 times, Ostrava-Katowice 3 times, Katowice-Krakow 16 times. If you want to go by day train this one appears as the best connection: Leaves Prague Main Station (hlavni nadrazi) at 9:36, arrives in Ostrava hlavni nadrazi at 12:43, leaves Ostrava at 13:01, arrives in Katowice 14:32, leaves Katowice at 14:48, arrives to Krakow in 16:49. You can find this and other options at Deutsche Bahn website.
Thank you for your detailed response. You've both been most helpful. What we decided to do was hire a driver ( just this morning) in Prague (Mike mentioned in Rick's Prague guidebook) and save the hassle. Its a splurge but we decided it was worth it at this stage of the trip. That way we'll see more of the countryside along the way and have some interesting stops.
Glad the plan is coming together. I don't know what map you were viewing, but a train schedule can often give you a more complete answer. How to Look Up Train Schedules Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it.
