Prague to Cesky Krumlov & Karlovy Vary itinerary suggestion

I believe the bus to Cesky Krumlov is about 3 hours. The train is about 2.5 hours. Speaking of the trains I believe the first direct train doesn’t arrive in Cesky Krumlov until about noon. Then, I believe, the only direct train back is about 4pm. That means 5 or 6 hours of travel for a few hours of visit. Maybe the buses have more convenient timing but I don’t much enjoy buses.

Because a lot of folks use the tour groups to do Cesky Krumlov as a day trip (visit Viator for examples), that time from lunch to mid-afternoon isn’t as enjoyable as the mornings and the evenings when the day trippers are gone.

And there is a lot to see so doing a day trip to Cesky Krumlov isn’t something I would do. I would spend a night at the very least, and two nights isn’t bad.

CK Shuttle offers door to door transfers from Prague to CK in either shared vans or private cars. We used them years ago - they offered great service. We stayed overnight - I wouldn't want to do it as a day trip.

You might want to consider booking a private scenic transfer either to CK or back to Prague, and add a stop somewhere along the route, i.e. Kutna Hora. The two locations you're looking at are in different directions from Prague, and would involve a great deal of travel time to see both.

I used CK too. The other shuttle is Bean, but the train is maybe a bit faster unless you are the first hotel at both ends and as I recall tge train leaves at about 9am which is about as early a transfer as I want on holiday. Return you could do the shuttle if they have a good later one as the 4pm train is a bit early for me with an overnight stay but maybe okay with a 2 night stay. I like the freedom of movement on a train, but nothing wrong with the shuttle.

Český Krumlov is definitely worth an overnight stay, especially since the throng of tourists tends to arrive at 10 a.m. and leave at 3pm. Trains from Prague have to make the connection in České Budějovice, so that actually takes a little bit longer than if you would hire a private car or even take a bus directly down from Prague. Would you consider renting a car?

If you can stay overnight in CK, it is even more magical after the day tourists leave... include the Barouqe Theater tour....English one is usually at 10a.m.

For Karlovy Vary, use the bus.. it is quicker than the train. RegioJet bus.

For Cesky Krumlov you can do the bus or the train... there is only 1 daily direct train.. otherwise, change in Ceske Budejvoice. The bus station is a bit closer to the town center.. compared to the train station.

we're researching a similar itinerary for next May, and also want to include Cesky Krumlov & České Budějovice as well as Karlovy Vary, probably with 2-3 nights in each area. trying to figure out the order of stays so we're not doing too much backtracking through Prague (unless that's the only way).

open to renting a car vs. public transportation, if that would be more convenient and flexible.

What are your planned dates for May 2027? If you do rent a car there are certainly many spots to stop and visit. For ex. Plzen is home to the other mother brewery Pilsner Urquell. The town was the only region liberated by the US. By chance the dates coincide The 81st Liberation Festival wll be May 4-9. https://www.slavnostisvobody.cz/en/ Very Pro-American town!!

There are many castles to visit, World Heritage sites. natural areas etc. Between CB and CK is Hluboka castle.

Some random thoughts.

The atmosphere in Karlovy Vary is great but I find the evenings a bit boring.... restaurants are lacking. It is great during nice days, meandering the length of the collonade, visiting the thermal pool, nearby Lockett castle, finding homemade spa wafers. Honestly I've never felt a big need to stay overnight but if you want a little down time why not. (There are two other spa towns in proximity to KV which create a triangle if you are interested in a spa stay)

Cesky Krumlov is my favorite go to place. 1 night is sufficient but again 2 nights if you wanna take it easy. Definitely get tickets for the Baroque theater. (If you have time you could do the castle tour but it is not of the essence IMO). Pappa's Living restaurant, find the Gypsy Bar for music, visit the gardens beyond the theater,

In either case, you could leave your bulk luggage in Prague then just take an overnight bag if you decide on public transport. RegioJet bus is the first choice for bus service.

I've only ever used public transport while in CZ as public transport is quite good and affordable.
