Traveling from Prague to Budapest in mid-December. Thinking of taking a train. What means of transportation would be recommended? We are also interested in an overnight train. Any suggestions for a website to research overnight trains?
Oh yes, the Man in Seat 61 gives me all the best advice:

Personally, I would fly. Czech Air for about $125. That long on a train would drive me nuts
Here's a blog post that we did earlier this year, comparing the options.
We just trained from Budapest to Prague and spent the day in Vienna. 2.5 hours from Budapest to Vienna. Train got us in at 10:30am. Spent the day at Schönbrunn Palace, which was fantastic. Took the 5:10 train to Prague and got in at 9:00pm. Great day.
The train from Prague to Budapest and vice versa does not go via Vienna, although it is possible to go from Budapest /or Prague/ to Vienna and then to Prague /or Budapest/.
Hi,
I would take the train so fast it would make your head spin. The last thing I want to do on a trip is go through airport security an extra two times. The train...well they might x-ray your suitcase but most likely not. You walk on, sit down get comfortable with a book, and enjoy the scenery. Prague to Brno, to Brataslava to Budapest. Each of those cities in the middle merit a day or more.

If you are staying in the tourist areas of both Prague and Vienna; for the train, figure 7:45 hotel door to hotel door, or 4:30 by plane. Of course the plane will cost a bit more. Neither option has decent views.
