I have read conflicting information about train tickets from Prague to Budapest. We will be in Prague July 2, leaving for Budapest July 6. We want to take a daytime train. Should we purchase tickets in advance online or is it safe to wait until we get to Prague and just take some time to go to the train station and buy them there? Due to hotel reservations we must travel on the 6th so we can't afford to find out all the available day trains are already booked by the time we get to Prague. And if we should buy them in advance, which website is the best? I've seen more than one site referenced in forums dealing with other destinations out of Prague. Advice? And thanks in advance!
I'm not a huge long haul train fan, I would fly Czech Airlines instead. I think the best answer to your question is to purchase your tickets in advance for the discount and for the peace of mind. This is the website for the national service: http://m.cd.cz/
Right now, you can get tickets for one of the direct EC trains for 789 CZK ($34) 2nd class, or 953 CZK ($40) 1st class for July 6.

The best way to start is read the info on the Man in Seat 61 website. It provides good back ground info and pretty much walks you through how to buy a ticket. In December 2015 my wife and I took the train from Prague to Budapest. We bought first class tickets by the internet and did not have any problems.
Trains don't fill up. No one is counting passengers as they get on and off. If there are no seats, then people stand.
Thanks, everyone. I stumbled my way through the process and many thanks for the recommendation of The Man in Seat 61 website. As far as I'm concerned he should be nominated for a Nobel prize!
