Prague Taxis - trustworthy and reputable?

Hello
We are aware of that taxis at the train station may overcharge substantially and that we need to exercise caution.

This is our first time in Prague. As we explore the city, can we rely on getting trustworthy taxis that will charge
a reasonable fee? Is there any special advice for getting around the city? Taxis would be most convenient to minimize walking in the cold October days. Should we consider the subway ?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

AAA taxis are considered the best to use and they have English speaking dispatchers. there are several fair Price taxi stances in the city so worth considering them.
The Prague transport system is superb ,trams metro and buses can all be used on one ticket ,it is efficient and cheap .This link will give you info.

let me know where you are staying and I can help suggest how to get to various sites .much of the main tourist sites are pedestrianized so taxis and public transport can't get you to all of them.
BTW you might be surprised how warm Prague can be in October

Hi DF. I defer to Unclegus as the Prague expert, but I will chime in that the city's tram and subway systems go just about everywhere and are easy to use. You can get an all day pass for about $5; then just hop on and off as many times as you like. Enjoy your trip!

I only used taxis getting from and to the airport, around town I just walked or used the metro, no need for taxis otherwise. I felt the taxis were reasonable and honest. The only problem I encountered was on departure morning--called them with plenty of time to spare to get to airport around 4 am and a good 25 minutes went by--called again, and was told my taxi was stuck behind a garbage truck as the lane I was staying on was right near the main square and thus one-way, one lane only. I got to the airport with time to spare but it was a teeny bit nerve-wracking.

I second the recommendation for AAA Taxis if you choose to use taxis. I also highly recommend the buses and subways. Cheap, convenient and safe.

In Prague, the trams are the most useful for getting around; the metro is fine, but only has coverage near but not in the very center. Rick's book has directions for which transit goes where.

I wouldn't expect October to be THAT cold, although if you're used to a warm part of California you may not be ready to bundle up appropriately for walking. If you want to see actual historical temperatures rather than averages or estimates, you can look at Wunderground: https://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/LKKB/2017/10/13/DailyHistory.html?req_city=&req_state=&req_statename=&reqdb.zip=&reqdb.magic=&reqdb.wmo=.

Just as a test, I put in October 13, 2017, and got a high of 62 and a low of 48. Unless you're used to Honolulu temperatures, that should be fine for walking with a jacket, light sweater, etc - you won't need down parkas and the like. Play around with other dates in October, and other years, to see what comes up.
