Prague: stay in Castle District or Old Town?

We will have four nights in Prague (Sept. 29-Oct.2) ... our first time there. And I am having trouble deciding what part of the city to stay in. We love being in the center of a city and being able to walk almost everywhere, so I made a reservation at Hotel Metamorphis in Old Town. Then I read a great trip report about the Questenberk hotel in the castle district and wonder if that would be a better choice?

Are the crowds in Old Town truly overwhelming (I think that's my hesitation about Metamorphis) , or is it worth it to be in the center of everything? Would appreciate any comments.

This really is just about your personal preference. We stayed just a block or so off of the Stare Mesto. We went in mid May last year, which I would imagine has crowds comparable to when you are going. We did not think it was too loud or busy - just ask your hotel for an interior room if you are concerned.

For what it's worth, if I went back to Prague, I'd stay near the Stare Mesto again. The Castle Quarter is lovely and is well worth spending plenty of time in. But my personal preference would be to stay near the action. If you stay in the Castle Quarter, you'll have a solid 20 minute walk to get to most places in the Old Town or New Town (or take public transportation).

I totally agree with Steve's response. I also stayed in Stare Mesto, a couple of streets from the main square and I loved being in that area. I visited the castle district as it was one of my 'must sees', but I never considered staying there for the reasons Steve stated - it's a little far from many of the other sites I wanted to see. I'm not sure I would have done as much walking around at night in the castle district as I did around Stare Mesto.

I have also considered the Old Town area to be convenient when I stayed there on my own and with our tour group.

Thanks, everyone. I will now stop second-guessing myself and stick with my original reservation in Old Town! I think we will enjoy the night-time (and early morning) wandering.

Hotel Metamorphis is a great choice. You'll be near Stare Mesto, but it's situated at one end of an enclosed square/courtyard (the name escapes me) that's behind Tyn Church - and so is somewhat removed from the hustle & bustle.

I believe that is known as The Ungelt Courtyard .
