Prague Opera

We had the good fortune to attend the opera last night at the Opera House (not all operas are presented in this venue). Tosca by Puccini was the program, an opera I'd not seen performed.

The orchestra and singers were first-rate, the acoustics of this beautiful hall was excellent, and we secured loge box seats, as seniors, for about $30 US each. Unbelievable; comparable seats at Lincoln Center couldn't be had for ten times the price. I'll admit that Tosca isn't on my list of personal favorites, but magical nonetheless.

If you're visiting Prague and have even a slight fondness for opera, please go. It's a marvelous experience.

Final note: we're in Europe with carry-on luggage only; I wore jet black tech fabric cargo pants, a dark polo shirt and sneakers, while my wife had a tech golf skirt, polo and her usual Hermès scarf to fancy things up a tad. We were in fact seriously underdressed, but many others in the audience were casually attired, and we were not treated with any condescension.

Which opera house? The National Theater or the Estates? Saw Don Giovanni at the Estates several years ago and it was fabulous as well as an outstanding value.

Sam, I also saw Don Giovanni at the Estates Theatre, but it was back in 2010. It was a wonderful performance!

Neither. Státní Opera, on Wilsonova at the head of Wenceslas Square. The other two are lovely venues, but neither was constructed specifically for operatic productions.

Opera is indeed one of the great cultural offerings in Prague, at all three venues of the Narodni Divadlo. You can get advance tickets at the website for any of them, and there is indeed a 50% discount for seniors! We'll be over there in October, and already have our tickets for Rusalka at the National Theater and Der Rosenkavalier at the State Opera. None of the tickets cost more than $20.

I was there in 2021 and attended an opera at the State Opera. A lovely lovely opera house and so inexpensive!

I made my friends pack a dress and shoes for the evening - and we were certainly not over-dressed! They still talk about the evening.

@vtrevda, I'm so envious that you'll be seeing Der Rosenkavalier in Prague! One of my favorites.

There are so many websites for the Prague State Opera and Prague National theater. Does anyone know what the official tickets website is for each of them? Is there a government website for each venue, which I believe is safer usually.
Thanks for your help. :)
