My husband, myself and my 8-year old will be in Prague from sep 12-15. I'm looking for some fancy/chic 'budget' hotel suggestions. This will be our first time in Prague. So, we want to visit all the main attractions and explore the city as much as we can in 2.5 days. Our budget for the hotel is up to $260. I would love to get your recommendations!

My son and his wife stayed at Charles Bridge Palace a year ago and really loved it for its location in the center of things.
In July, I stayed at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and really loved it for being a short walk from the center of things and just one step removed from the bustle. I walked everywhere with no issues, but trams do go right by and the railroad station is about 10 minute walk.
I think both of these would fall within your budget range.
I wanted to add, that I went on a walking tour with livingpraguetours and was so pleased with the experience. I learned a great deal and it was a wonderful orientation to Prague.
