Prague Hotel and Itinerary help

Hi!
My husband and I will be in Prague in early October for part of our honeymoon and need some advice on where to stay. I've heard the most desirable area is Old Town/Prague 1. Is it too out of the way to stay across the river or in Prague 5? We are okay walking 25 min or so in order to get to the tourist sights. Our budget is $100 or so per night with a private bath (breakfast doesn't need to be an option). All we ask is for a clean, reliable hotel in a safe area that won't have a ton of loud nightclubs/bar late at night; however normal traffic/city noise isn't an issue. We do plan on taking a couple day trips to other towns, so will 5 nights, 4 full days be a long enough stay? Any advice is appreciated! Thank you in advance!

We stayed at Linder Castle Prague near the monastery & castle and it was fine. Quiet with several nice restaurants in the immediate neighbourhood, like h(ost) & Peklo. About a 20-25 minute walk downhill with tram-22 stop around the corner, and tram-25 about a block or so north.

We enjoyed our stay at the Green Garland in Old Town, a short walk to the Clock in one direction and the Charles Bridge in the other direction. Pretty peaceful location on a narrow street (more like an alley) that is a dead end for cars.

Early October is one of their high seasons with doubles advertised at 2600 to 2900 CZK including a light breakfast. (Same rooms low season 1300-1500 CZK).

Four full days should give you a chance to see the highlight at a relaxing pace. We followed the RS guide book:
https://store.ricksteves.com/shop/p/prague-guidebook

https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/czech-republic

Depending on the length of your trip, and taking geographic proximity
into account, the following are my recommended priorities: 3 days:
Prague 4–5 days, add: Your choice of nearby day trips (Kutná Hora,
Terezín Memorial, Karlovy Vary, and three castles: Konopiště,
Karlštejn, or Křivoklát) 5 days, add: Český Krumlov (and skip day
trips)
Few cities can match Prague’s over-the-top romance, evocative Old
World charm…and tourist crowds. Prague is equal parts historic and
fun. No other place in Europe has become popular so quickly. And for
good reason: Prague — the only Central European capital to escape the
large-scale bombing of the last century’s wars — is one of Europe’s
best-preserved cities. It’s filled with sumptuous Art Nouveau facades,
offers tons of cheap Mozart and Vivaldi concerts, and brews some of
the best beer in Europe. Cross the famous Charles Bridge, communing
with vendors, artists, tourists, and a stoic lineup of Czech saints in
stone. Hike up to the world’s biggest castle for a lesson in Czech
history and sweeping views across the city’s spires and domes.

Hi Laura,

My husband and I are going to be spending 5 nights as of the 26th of Aug. We have never been there. After researching everyone's advice on which AREA they liked the best, we decided on Old Town/Prague 1 just because it is our first time there and I think it's all going to be fantastic no matter where we stay! That being said, I had not heard of anyone referencing district 5 which I see on the map as Smichov. I would research that district and see if anyone has any opinions about staying there. If you can be within a 25 min. walk from sights you want to see, and don't mind the walk then go for it. Not sure if you know the google earth app or if you have it, but you can put in a street in Prague and it will take you right down to street level and you can do a 360 degree to look around. Grab the little yellow person on the screen, drag him down to the street and you can "drive" around. Regarding where to stay, we have chosen airbnb for several reasons. The main reason is the price. During my research I would have 3 - 5 windows open on my computer and open up airbnb, vrbo, hotels (booking.com), google maps and a district map of Prague. Then I would compare. It seemed like airbnb seem to have the least expensive prices. Some people want hotels but I like to save money by making my own breakfast, possibly eating lunch at a really nice place (and maybe have leftovers for an evening meal at home). Or, set out early for sightseeing, get back to apt. for a light lunch and 15 min. power nap and then hit the streets for the afternoon and a really nice dinner out. We have rented a 1 bedroom apt. on Michalska st (this is where google earth came in handy because I can see what's around the neighborhood) which is just a short walk to the Charles Bridge, astronomical clock and many other tourist sites. I think the total is around $80/night and the pictures and reviews look really good. Word of warning regarding booking through airbnb. If you change your mind and cancel, airbnb will still charge you their "service fee". I think it's based on a percentage of what the total price would have been. Before you commit to booking, you will see what that fee is when you put in how many nights you want. It's not like a hotel or car where if you change your mind, you are refunded any money. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck. Let us know what happens!

Prague has an excellent public transport system so as long as you're near a tram line or metro station it really doesn't matter where you stay.
Personally, I would stay out of the Old Town - it's noisy at night. October will probably be better than summer when there are packs of drinking people roaming the streets but still I prefer a quieter neighborhood.

My perfect away from the crowds but at the foot of the bridge location is Kampa Island. We've stayed at 3 of the hotels on the island and liked them all. The most expensive one was the Hotel Residenze Lundborg and the other two were similar in price, the Kampa Hotel and the Golden Scissors Hotel (U Zlatych Nuzek). There are a few more on the island as well but I haven't stayed in any of them yet. Easy to walk up to the castle or across the bridge into the old town and in the late evening or early morning you'll have the bridge and the views all to yourselves. The area is called Mala Strana but it encompasses more than just Kampa Island.

The dollar goes very far there. The K&K Hotel Central on Hybernska just the other side of the Powder Tower from the Old Town (quiet, but still close to the center) was just under $100/night when we were there over Christmas. It's a gorgeous, newly renovated art nouveau building with the biggest breakfast I've ever seen. Basically a 4-star hotel for a 2-star price.

Prague 5 (Smichov) is a very big area so you would have to be more specific about the area you were planning to stay in. I wouldn't really look beyond Andel because the area becomes less dense after that. The area around Ujezd would be a good option, and within walking distance of Old Town.

Prague 2 (Vinohrady) is nice, less touristy but steps away from Wenceslas square. Lots of expats there. I guess you want to avoid Zizkov then, which is a student hub of bars/clubs, probably not the place for a honeymoon anyway. I also really like Karlin, which is fairly quiet and has a local feel as tourists don't really venture there even though it's so close to the centre, with many of the city's best cafes and pubs :) I stayed a week in Karlin while i was hunting for an apartment in prague and i really liked it :) With Airbnb it was $75 CAD per night for 2 people.

My husband and I will be in Prague in early Oct and have just made a prepaid reservation at Marriott apts. for $82.00 a night. I prefer not to stay in an American hotel but the price is right with a kitchenette, allowing us to make our own breakfast. Congs. on your upcoming marriage.

I will be staying at a B&B called the Big Boot and they are mentioned in the RS guide book. They are great as far as replying to my emails and we have 3 of us, so this seems to be a good fit by the Castle. Enjoy your trip.

One of our neighbors stayed in an "apartment" type residence. They raved about how helpful the owners were and how spacious it was. All I know is that it is called the Acadia Residence. We too will be in Prague in October, but are using hotel points to stay in hotels. Enjoy the trip and the time together!

I've had the pleasure of spending a week in Prague (we stayed at....the name escapes me , but it translates to "the yellow boot" , found in Rick Steves' guidebook).& it was perfect.
Anyway .. don't over plan!
The charm of being in Prague is the city itself ..so beautiful !
Relax , slow down...Prague is swarming with tourists , but , if you can drag yourself out of bed when the sun rises , you will have the Charles Bridge all to yourself (minus a couple of photographers & lovebirds).
Make sure you take the time to enjoy some black light theatre while you're there too.
Enjoy!

We spent four wonderful nights/days in Prague during early Aug 2015. We stayed at 1.Republic Hotel (firstrepublic.cz). Closer to I.P. Pavlova metro station and a few tram lines. Great breakfast. No frills, large comfortable rooms and friendly staff. The place is away from the hubbub near Old Town and quiet.
