Prague for 7 days?

I really want to go to Prague.. I like to go away for 7 days, is this to much time in Prague? I don't mind doing day trips.

We spent a week in Prague in February 2010. Snow on the ground, but we still found plenty to do to keep us busy.

The single most memorable thing from that trip was stumbling on an old decrepit church, that should have been locked up, but wasn't. So we snuck in, and while sitting there, in this dank, unheated, run down house of God, the pipe organ began to play.

Then, right next door was the Prague Police Museum. In the equally rundown monastery adjoining the church. All in Czech, no English, but filled with extremely eclectic exhibits. Yes, many police museum things (including an exhibit about how to defend yourself against the Americans when they launched their inevitable attack on Czechoslovakia), but also a room full of psychedelic, black-lighted eyes, an exhibit on the deserts of Africa, and what not.

I really enjoyed our time in Prague. And as a result, in a few weeks, we will be checking out some "new Pragues." Krakow, Poland, and Lviv, Ukraine.

Lots of destinations work as day trips from Prague, and I'd expect about half your time to be used for day trips. In that case, you probably want your hotel be convenient to the main train station. I do like staying over in small towns and, in a popular place like Cesky Krumlov, that helps you to experience it without all the other day-trippers. You have to balance that against the convenience or price of a home base in the city.

We just had parts of 2 days years ago, and one day it absolutely poured rain (in April). We could’ve used more time- never got over to see the castle or it’s grounds. Attended a classical music performance held in a church, and got a meat and cheese platter in a bar that had the stinkiest cheese ever. We visited Cesky Krumlov for 2 days en route to Prague.

If 7 days is your style, then I’m sure you can find all of it in Prague worthwhile, but there might be a tempting day trip or two.

Between Prague itself and various day trips, you can easily spend 7 days ….and more. You can spend 3 or 4 days just hitting the highlights within Prague itself, depending on your interests. And you can visit places like Cesky Krumlov, Ceske Budejovice, Kutna Hora, Terezín, Pilsen - all doable as day trips by public transport.

Would this be before or after your 7 days in Spain, mentioned in your other post?

Love this question , was concerned as we have 5 full days in Prague this May and I’m not sure how to fill it .

I know there’s the “ old town” and the castle - and of course just wandering - but which daytrip ( if one was only going to choose one ) do people suggest as best ?

Hey, Pat - many of the towns mentioned above have their own signature beer - the “real” Budweiser, for example, and the definitive Pilsner. Not sure if that’s your beverage of choice, but are you interested in a beer pilgrimage, for a change from Molson or Moosehead or LaBatt’s?

lol cyn - Budweiser isn’t beer - it’s to rinse through your hair ! We don’t drink Molson either - that’s high school beer !

My hubby is looking forward to touring the Pilsner Urquell brewery though - I’m not a big beer drinker but enjoy one of those on a hot day !

Pat, I agree with you - Budweiser is not beer but yellow water. That's Budweiser from St.Louis. However Budweiser from Ceske Budejovice (in German Budweis) is very good beer. It's even sold in the US under the name Czechvar. 7 days for Prague - is this too much time in Prague? Of course not. Rick Steves used to have 7 days tour in Prague. Few suggestions for day trips: Kutna Hora - medieval silver mining town, castles: Konopiste, Krivoklat, Karlstejn. Concentration camp - Terezin. Cesky Krumlov - better for overnight, it is far from Prague and it looks completely different when day hordes of tourists dissapear.

We easily filled the time during our week in Prague. You'll have time to see the major sights AND explore off-the-beaten-path spots (which are often just a couple of streets away from the main tourist path). Spent a full morning in Lidice and took a day trip to Olomouc. If you go to Olomouc, check in at the TI to see if they still have an Old Town tour.

I studied abroad in Prague, and I can definitely see filling multiple days with the sights of this wonderful city. A recommended weekend trip from Prague would be Cesky Krumlov--I highly recommend stopping there if you can--and I also enjoyed trips to Vienna and Salzburg while based in Prague. If you're a beer fan, perhaps you could visit Pilsen? I visited the Pilsner Urqell Brewery with my group and thought the tour was cool.

I have been travelling to Prague for around 25 years now and spend up to 30 days a year there and I always find new stuff to do. Back there in just over a weeks time going to be visiting a few newer micro breweries and new pubs but also will be out in the countryside going walking and should be at a football game or 2.
As other have said if you like beer(I do) then lots of beer related tourism including the fantastic Plzen Brewery.I am actually going there again on my next trip though I won't be doing a tour just visiting the brewery for a few beers as it is close to the Train station
