Prague Christmas Markets Closed

I just saw that the Czech Republic closed all of its Christmas Markets yesterday. Does anyone have further information, such as how long the ban will last...all season? Also, is it worth visiting Prague during Christmas if the markets are closed?

Others may chime in, but everything else seems to be open if vaccinated. So all the same things that would make you go at other times are still there (just cold). I hope to be there next week and am a touch disappointed about the markets but it will still be a good trip.

We were in Prague in January. We found the weather to be fine, especially when it was sunny. There was plenty to do and the crowds were a bit less dense at that time of year. We had an especially nice time on Castle Hill and enjoyed the mulled wine many of the restaurants were serving outside their doors. Everything we wanted to see was open. We loved our time in Prague.

Thank you for sending that link! The website certainly depicts a more promising Christmas scene. I'll have to check in with you again to see how your time there was.

The Christmas Market on Wenceslas Square is currently open as it is classed as a "cultural event". The Old Town Square market is closed but the side stalls that are there the whole year are open. Cafes, bars and restaurants are closing at 10pm.

James-- The plan is to head to Budapest after Prague. We're praying that the country doesn't impose any restrictions or lockdowns, at least for those vaccinated.

Jason-- Thanks! Any word on the Kampa Island, Havelské tržiště, or St. George Basilica Christmas markets?

rsuray, I will report back for sure. But I won’t be in Prague till later next week.

James, I am a sucker for a cheap flight……

Jason, see you Thursday!

rsuray; of course there is no guarantee but a few days back Orban made a point of saying that he will keep the country open as long as the hospitals can handle the load. For that he has dedicated one hospital for COVID only that will be put on line if needed. I had two elective procedures done in Budapest just before Thanksgiving and it didnt sound like things were getting close to max. But my perception could be wrong.

Travelmom; okay to be fair, for that price you get nothing but a random assigned seat. I suspect it would be closer to $100 with seat assignment, carry on and a checked bag. Still, not bad. My Lviv to Budapest flight in April was $51 until I wanted carry on and a checked bag, then it became $102

rsuray, ST George Basilica Christmas Market is closed and there's nothing outside the castle main entry this year. Havelska street market is open but about 60% of a "normal" year. I didn't see anything on Kampa Island, normally it's under the trees in Na Kampe. I've not been to Namesti Miru yet but as that is the same company that runs the old market at Republic Square (which is closed) then I expect that is closed as well. So the only option I know for a market where you can eat and drink are the stalls at the top of Wenceslas Square.

Travelmom,
You bet! looking forward.

I am in Prague right now and while Christmas markets are closed everything else is open. Some merchants are still selling hot wine/sausage sandwiches but not as Christmas market. It is currently snowing which adds to the charm. Not very crowded which is good for touring.
