Prague Castle

What's the best way to visit Prague Castle in order to avoid waiting in ticket lines? Should I book a guided tour in advance? Can one even explore the castle on their own? I'm guessing there would be an entry fee...is there a way to just book entry to the castle in advance without being part of a tour group? Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated! Thanks.

This was over a decade ago, but I visited Prague during Easter weekend when the city was otherwise packed and I don't remember waiting in anything but a cursory line.

all I can say is to get there early ie by 9.00am at the latest, btw there are also security lines to get into the castle area and they can be up to 30 minutes far as I am aware there is no advance way of buying tickets but will have loook when I get some time tomorrow, bedtime for me now

Just to go through Castle courtyards you don't need a ticket. They have three different circuits through the Castle and for them you will need a ticket. Lines for tickets are not that bad. Get detailed information about your options at the Visitor Center. What is worse than ticket line is the line for security clearance which nowadays in the era of terrorism are at both entrances to the Castle. The one from Hradcanske namesti (square) is very long and you would spend some time there. Take the tram #22 and get off at the stop Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle). You will get to the back entrance where you encounter just short lines.

this is the various tickets you can get, you cannot buy them on line.last time I did a tour of the castle was about 3 years ago and did the A circuit. You can use the ticket over 2 days but you cannot return to places you have already visited, you have a barcode on the tickets and have to scan that each time you enter a new building/area.I did like the Story of Prague Castle a huge exhibition in a really lovely building.I always visit Golden lane,it is my favourite place in the area and they have a great Armoury museum there and also a chance to use old Fashioned crossbows an opportunity I never miss. The spent a lot of time and money doing up the lane and the building are set out as they might have been used when first built and are most interesting.
