I never used the card. For card to pay for itself you would have to be quite active. If you want also to use it as a
public transport pass you would have to add money. Prices and all other necessary information are here:

I used public transport often. But if you are like most tourists and want to see sights only in Old Town, Little Quarters (Mala Strana) and Hradcany then it's all in walkable distance. It's about half an hour walk from Old Town, across Charles Bridge and up to the Castle. But to see Vysehrad, Krizik Fountain, Mucha's Slavic Epic in Veletrzni Palac, National Technical Museum, chateau Troja and many others you will use public transport. Or if you are not staying in the center and prefer quieter neighborhood you will be using public transport.

We always get a Prague Card. You get a lot for the money with it. It will allow you entrance to 40 top attractions, free entry to the castle, a 2 hour bus tour, and loads of discounts on other things like cruises, tours, and much more. Yes, if you are going to use transportation, you will want the transport card too. We usually don't bother with that though because we enjoy walking in the city. It is a very walkable city!
