Prague & Brno

We have never been to the Czech Republic and we are looking forward to our first visit late May/early June 2018. After reading so much about the crowds in Prague, we're thinking of heading to Brno instead of or maybe in addition to Prague (spending a shorter time in Prague). I know it is hard to imagine we would consider skipping Prague and we recognize there will be tourists, but it just sounds rather unappealing now. Would you skip Prague? Have you been Brno? What did you enjoy? Thanks.

Hi Melinda. We were in Prague in July and enjoyed it a lot. Certain areas were crowded, but like Rick suggests, if crowds ever bother you, just walk one or two blocks off the beaten track and you will be in a quiet area with locals. I definitely wouldn't skip Prague; it's great. Enjoy your trip!

I certainly would not give up Prague for Brno and the crowds should not be too bad in may/June, there are plenty of places to get away from the crowds and I really enjoy the outdoor spaces that Prague offers.
Brno is a lovely city and very different from Prague ,I have a friend who lived there till very recently and visited a few years ago. lots to see and do and again some nice outdoor places to head to.

It would be a shame to miss Prague ( or any other major city , for that matter ) due to " crowds " , a fact of life in the 21 st century . I'm not fond of crowded areas myself , but working around them is not particularly difficult ,

Brno is Prague's little sister. Nice city, but it will always stand in the shadow. It has a nice historical centre and the famous Unesco World Heritage Villa Tugendhat if you're interested in modern architecture. Good for one full day and another one or two for day tripping to attractions around. Nearby - and very easily reached by train - are the palaces of Slavkov and Bucovice. Another possible day trip is to Mikulov (change trains in Breclav).

I have been to Brno and like it, but would never suggest someone go there instead of Prague. Crowds are a fact of life in every major European destination because there are good reasons everyone wants to visit them. Visit the most crowded locations early in the day and late in the afternoon.

If you do make a short visit to Brno, do visit the Tugendhat House. One of the most important sites of Modernist architecture in the world. And the city has many other such buildings by lesser known architects (Mies van der Rohe designed the Tugendhat). There is a nicely restored city center that you could spend part of a day exploring. I was there about 10 years ago, at that time the rest of the city was still pretty un-restored from the Communist era.

Hi, Melinda, I live in Prague and was in Brno a couple of months ago. I echo what everyone is saying, but I would add that you should be sure to reserve a time at Villa Tugendhat as soon as possible, because it books up very quickly. If you have a bit of time after seeing Brno, I would also recommend a quick trip to the Moravian Karst (it's about 45 minutes north of Brno) to see the caves. It is a stunningly beautiful region, and the caves are fascinating. But if there's a choice between the caves and Prague, pick Prague!

Do it! Buck the trend. Skip Prague entirely and go see the rest of the country!

Your money will go so much further, and you'll enjoy a beautiful country without the tourist pollution that afflicts Prague. I would check out Trebon, Trebic, Znojmo, Brno, Mikulov, Olomouc and Ostrava. Take the train. Grab a bike. You'll have a whale of a time.

PM me if you need specifics.

By the way- Brno is home to an international fireworks festival in late May and early June. It looks fabulous. We were planning our trip ti include it but had to change plans. Goggle it for details -its only certain nights.
