I'm traveling to Prague on business but will have about 6-7 days of leisure time.
My base will be Prague but hoping to take a day trip to Bastei bridge, Dresden Germany.
Question #1. Is this a realistic day trip?
Question# 2. Anyone know of best routing?
Question #3. Any other must do's, other than all the wonderful sights in Prague.
Traveling alone until I meet up with colleagues.
Thanks for any feedback.
Dawn.
- Absolutely.
- Round trip by train cost 38 euro if you get an advance purchase nonrefundable ticket. Leaves Prague at 8:29 and arrives Dresden at 10:45, return at 5:06 pm or 7:06 pm, takes 2 hours 21 minutes. www.bahn.com
Thank you!
How far from Dresden train station to bastei bridge?
The Bastei bridge is on the train route from Prague to Dresden, but the train doesn't stop there but in Bad Schandau, the next town. From Bad Schandau you have to take the S1 back to Rathen, in Rathen you cross the Elbe on a ferry and can walk up to the bridge. But I would recommend a circular hike from Rathen via the Amselgrund to the Amselsee, from there through the Schwedenlöcher up to the Bastei, and back to Rathen. Here is a map of the area.
PS: you can't do Dresden and the Bastei bridge on the same day.
Thank you Martin.
That is exactly what I'm looking for.

I think a far more interesting site is the Königstein, an old fortress built atop a flat mesa near Bad Schandau. Again, get off the train from Prague at Bad Schandau, one stop before Dresden, and take the S-Bahn to the town of Königstein and a bus from there.
In 2012, a one-way ticket from Prague to Bad Schandau, purchased in Prague, cost me 357 Kc (about 13,- €), so a round trip ticket should cost about 26€, less than one way with a Bahn Savings Fare ticket. A local day ticket that covered the S-Bahn RT from Bad Schandau to Königstein and the bus up to the fortress cost 4,-€.
If you go to the Bastei, same thing. about 13€ each way to/from Bad Schandau and a local day ticket will cover all of your travel.
Thank you!
I appreciate the reply, I will look into it
I think a far more interesting site is the Königstein,
It depends on your interests. If you are interested in history and architecture Königstein surely is more interesting. But the Bastei (area) is great if you like nature and hiking. Even if you don't have a hiking map but only the one I linked before. The walk to Hohnstein for example is quite nice too, and Hohnstein is a very cute little town with a castle high above the Polenz river. The hike from the train station up to the Rauenstein is also quite nice and interesting.
Thank you again Martin.
Appreciate the feed back.
Interested in more nature and hikes. I'm curious... When doing a google swarch for bastei bridge, it will bring up pictures that look onto the bridge with beautiful rock formations. Do you know how (or even if possible) to get to that area for a view? I still plan to so the bridge but love the view looking into the bridge from the distance.
The view is shown on the map, between the Schwedenlöcher and the Bastei. Here is a better map (1). As you can see, you have to leave the marked path and walk a few metres to the south.
(1) these hand-drawn maps are the most popular hiking maps for this area.
Thank you again Martin.
You've been most helpful.
