we are attending a matinee performance of Marriage of Figaro at the Estates Theater in Prague in mid September. I would prefer to travel without a sport coat and tie but would like to dress appropriately. Would dress slacks, a sport shirt and sweater be ok for an afternoon performance or should I bring a sport coat and tie with me.
Estates is a little less formal than the big time opera houses. When we went (Don Giovanni), it went from very dressy (Brit opera tourists) to blue jeans & collared shirts (American ski bums). I brought a tie and slacks to be safe, but was not really necessary. Great performance. And to think that Mozart himself held the baton in the very same orchestra pit.
I saw The Marriage of Figaro at the Estates--excellent production in a gorgeous little jewel box of a theatre, and as Sam says, Mozart himself conducted there, the last remaining theatre that he did and that makes it just a bit more magical. Your proposed attire will be perfect.
I have been to the Estates several times over many years, what you suggest wearing will be absolutely fine. it is a lovely little theatre.
Thanks for the prompt replies. I will leave the sport coat and tie at home
It also depends on where you're sitting. People tend to dress up when they sit in the stalls and in the boxes, and things tend to be a bit more casual for the galleries and the nosebleeds.
However, the Estates Theatre is so small and intimate that the nosebleeds offer great views, albeit with a somewhat terrifying sheer drop to the stalls below. So if you can handle heights, don't shirk away from the cheap seats in this theatre - they are really great value. Also, the cheaper matinee performances are less dressy affairs than evening shows.
