New Year's eve in Prague with kids

My family will be in Prague for New Year's Eve with another family. We'll have two eight-year-old kids. We'd like to have a nice dinner (okay if it's on the pricey side) in a relatively family-friendly place, then some sort of New Year's Eve activity.

We're staying in the Castle District, and our hotel has recommended Blue Duck and U TŘÍ HOUSLIČEK for restaurants. What do folks think of these options? Any other restaurant recommendations? And any suggestions for family-friendly (and not too crazy) New Year's Eve activities?

I would go with your hotels suggestions as many places will be booked well before hand. the actual city will be very busy and before and around midnight and is not the ideal place for young children. It is totally manic with fireworks going off indiscriminately and can be terrifying for adults never mind kids. I spent last new year in Letna Park and it was pretty crazy. There are official fireworks on New years day at 6.oopm which are much more civilised and much more enjoyable for the kids.

I would suggest you get out early to eat dinner and go back to your hotel early. Prague can get a little boisterous at times with so many U.K. revelers going over for weekends and holidays on cheap European airlines.

David that is a very strange statement.Certainly Prague at new year is very boisterous and has nothing to do with UK visitors,in fact the Russian and Asian visitors out number them these days. The locals will be the one celebrating with the indiscriminate fireworks.

Uncle Gus is spot on with his description of the fireworks on New Years Eve in Prague. It starts early, its very loud, and continues well past midnight. There's some kind of fireworks they had that sounded like a mini mortar going off...just one large explosion. In addition to lots of of others, these ones were particularly loud and bothersome. Get out early, have supper and retire to the safety and peace of your hotel.

Thanks, everyone. We'll make an early reservation.

What would folks suggest for a restaurant? We're near the Castle District and Mala Strana. The closest option our hotel recommended is U MODRÉ KACHNIČKY. Any other suggestions?

I think the tongue-in-cheek humour was lost on Uncle Gus.

I just remembered...Stephen Colbert was there the same time we were for NYE on Dec 31 2015. Of course for much of it we were safely sequestered in our apartment on the top floor of the Municipal House (the old Conductors apartment nonetheless, how cool is that?!) and weren't even aware he was in the Old Town Square until a few days later. Here's a clip from his show where he plays some footage of the fireworks: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FIhMJvGPbYk

tongue in check or insulting a whole nation take it anyway you wish but I know what I think.
Jessica where exactly is your hotel and we may be able to make more suggestions. Some accommodation may be on steeper areas and away from public transport so knowing exactly where you are staying will help.

you might find this article helpful. Written by Jason a regular contributor to the forum. I was in Prague just over a week ago and had a great time visiting the Christmas markets with him, we also saw the official lighting up of the Christmas tree in Old town Square, then went on to try the various hot wine/cider drinks in the markets.

A group of us ate at U MODRÉ KACHNIČKY back in October. We have an annual tradition of going away somewhere in Europe for a long foodie weekend and this year was Prague. This was one of the restaurants we ate at. We opted for the 7 course House Tasting Menu and for the most part was very good, some excellent wine pairings. It wasn't particularly busy when we went (a Saturday night) and we were the penultimate table to leave at 11:30. It's old fashoned, a bit musty, kitschy and tired and although it has several rooms it all feels a bit cramped. Not knowing the children I couldn't say whether or not they'd enjoy the food, it's quite traditional, lots of game, duck and offal although I suspect they'd enjoy the dumplings.

We also had a very good lunch at Lokal, www.lokal-dlouha.ambi.cz/en/, it looks a bit austere but that's part of its charm. They brew their own excellent beer on site. Expect it to be busy but service is good. The children will probably like it plus they offer chicken schnitzel and what child doesn't like schnitzel? I can recommend the pork shoulder and the house sausages, I can't advise you on the bull testicles with mushrooms as no-one in the group fancied them on that day. I probably wouldn't consider it for a New Years Eve dinner but certainly would for lunch on New Years Day.

Take a look at Luka Lu. Might be interesting for your kids and the NYE menu looks pretty good. https://www.lukalu.cz/en/. If you're still out at midnight then head for Shooters Island as you'll get great views of the Charles Bridge celebrations but from a safe distance.
