Must not be missed activities/ food/wine experiences Prague

We are making our first trip to Prague in June to join the RS Best of Eastern Europe tour. We will have 3 days on our own (5 adults) prior to our RS tour starting. We've always tried to work in a cooking class or food/wine experience in our previous travels. Has anyone done something food or wine focused (cooking class, tour etc) in Prague and, if so, would you recommend it for other travellers?

We are also interested in hearing from anyone who wants to share a must do/can't be missed experience.

Our previous travels have been greatly enriched by the information and feedback we've received on the RS Forum.

Thank you from Canada
JoAnn

this is a new tour that has just recently started with Living Prague. I am good friends with Jason that runs the tours and eaten and knocked back many a meal and a beer with him over the years.
so much good food around ,much of it fairly rustic but good.
must for me is Koleno (Pork Knee) and pork ribs, big meaty portions so worth considering sharing. Worth looking at beer snack menu or Food for beer that many places offer, just pick a selection of hot and cold stuff to share, 2 dishes each will be plenty but for a group of 5 order a koleno a Ribs and a selection of other things and just get tucked in.Beer cheese a mix of various cheeses onions and mustard is an acquired taste but I love it, pickled sausage, fried bread with garlic, head cheese,a bit like pork brawn but tasty, sausage with tomatoes and onion, fried cheese, cold hams, salamis and pork meats, to name just a few dishes.
Pork knee usually takes about 30-45 minutes to be prepared and they usually tell you how long it will be.if you want everything to share just tell your server you want all the items to share, sit down relax and have a beer or two while your food is being prepared.
Places to do this that I have been to recently are
http://www.pivolod.cz/ ,downstairs in the Pub area.
https://www.kolonialpub.cz/
https://beerpub.hellsbells.cz/en/ ,bit out of the way at the back of the technical museum .
for a wee wine experience try this place.

bit out of the way in a park in the Vinohrady area of the city but you can sit in the vineyard drinking the locally made wine and enjoy a plate of meats and cheeses. not fine dining but great for a lunch in the sun.

Hi, JoAnn, I live in Prague, and while I have never used the Cook and Meet company, many of my friends have and say their tours are absolutely wonderful. Daniele Toniolo is the guide they have used, and here's their website: https://www.cook-meet.com.
For a can't-be-missed experience, it depends on what you're most interested in. I'm assuming the RS tour will take you to the main tourist sites, so I won't mention them. Here are three of my favorite off-the-beaten-bath activities:
1. If you're interested in art and history, I strongly recommend the Lobkowicz Palace. It's up at the Castle, but because it's a separate admission, it's never crowded. The audio tour gives you a capsule history of the region, as it was experienced by one noble family. The palace also has a lovely, reasonably priced cafe.
2. If you're interested in nature, I'd recommend a brief hike in Divoka Sarka, a stunning nature reserve with a rocky gorge, stream, and old forests. Take the 26 tram (from Namesti Republiky) or the 20 tram (from Malostranska) all the way to the end (it's about a 25-minute ride with interesting views of the city), and walk toward the McDonald's. Take the right turn about 100 meters beyond the McDonald's and then follow the switchbacks down to the gorge. The walk through the gorge is about 1 kilometer, at the end of which is a lovely beer garden. You can continue on the path along the stream as long as you like and then turn back to catch the 20 or 26 tram back to the center. This is a true Czech experience!
3. If you're interested in music, all the major churches offer tourist concerts. The concerts are of the "greatest hits" variety, but the musicians are truly outstanding and will give you a wonderful musical and architectural experience. I recommend either St. Nicholas Church (there's one in Old Town Square and one at Malostranske Namesti), or Obecni Dum (called Municipal House in English--it's near Namesti Republiky). You don't need to reserve these tickets in advance--they're always available at the door.
I hope this helps! Prague is a truly magical place. Oh: I almost forgot my first piece of advice. Don't forget to look up, everywhere you go. All the buildings have lovely frescoes, sgraffito, or ornaments. Have a great trip!

Dear Mari
Thank you for all the great information. My daughter and I appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post. We will definitely look at the cooking class option and we are excited about the hike you suggested. We would love to do some mother daughter (she's 21) experience or special sightseeing when in Prague. If you have any other suggestions please feel free to message me. The concerts sound lovely as well.

Take care,
JoAnn

this is the hiking area the Mari mentions,I was last hiking round that area just after new year, no need for heavy duty walking gear but nice place to go for a walk and as she says veruy easy to get the tram to and from.we walked from the McDonalds through the park over to the Jeneralka area and got a bus back to the main road Evropska.
