Just finished a two-week tour of the Czech Republic. Like most Americans, I always associated the CR with high quality beer. I was suprised to discover that southern Moravia has had a huge wine industry, starting in Roman times. The people make and drink a great quantity of wine, its just not exported to the US som unknown here.
We visited several wineries and cellars, including one that allowed sampling of the 100 best wines in the CR. I am not a wine aficionado but have tasted many of the famous and expensive wines from France, Italy, Germany, California, etc. These Czech wines were as good as any.
We centered in Mikulov, but visited some of these wineries and restaurants in off the beaten path villages. The annual wine festival was called off due to the rain and flooding, but we still enjoyed seeing the very non-touristed towns and villages. Plenty of castles and art to see as well.
So, I'm strongly recommending that you include places outside of Prague on a visit to the CR, and you'll find some of those backdoor experiences, were many people dont speak English, and food is both strange and familiar at the same time. From Mikulov, the Vienna airport is less than 2 hours away.
