Kutna Hora and Terezin

We will be visiting Prague the first week of January and I would really like to visit both Kutna Hora and Terezin but we only have one day to do outside trips. Would it be possible to arrive at Kutna Hora in the morning and drive to Terezin after lunch and tour the town? We will have a car. I'm just wondering if that gives us enough time. I know we won't be able to do an in depth tour of either place but I'm okay with that.

i had to check the driving times between them as we used trains (Kutna Hora) and buses (Terezin) to see them on separate days. Google Maps shows less than 2 hours between them. Snow or freezing rain will increase that time.

If all you want is a quick stop in each (Sedlec Ossuary, St Barbaras Church, Church of the Assumption of our Lady at Sedlec, in Kutna Hora), (Camp and Townsite in Terezin), it would be a long day but yes, I think it would work.

Terezin has two different locations for visiting and your car will help. First, is the Small Fortress, which is interesting with its own history. The ghetto and its surrounding area gives one a totally different experience.

Actually Terezin has several pionts of major interest and is really a small town not that much smaller than Kutna Hora. With a car and an early start you should be able to do both, but as it is January your amount of daylight will be limited and both places do need daylight to be able to see and enjoy properly though in the case of Terezin I would use the word experience rather than enjoy.

Thank you for your responses. After looking more into each town I think it would just be too much for one day since I also want to do the silver mine tour in Kutna Hora and I do not want to rush through Terezin. I think I will add Terezin on our way out of town since it is on our way back home (we live in the Netherlands).

That is very sensible, they are both place where a full day might be too much but a half day is just not enough. I am in Prague at the moment till the 5 th January and may take a trip to Kutna Hora as my travelling companion has not visited there..

Enjoy your trip! We will be there from January 2-6. I’m excited to see Prague and parts of the Czech Republic. I’ve been using Rick Steves’ Prague book to help me plan most of the trip. :-)

Hi,

Keep in mind that Terezin had a history long before its tragic history connected with WW2 and the Holocaust, something lost on international visitors. .

It was called Theresienstadt, where the assassin of the Archduke, Heir to Habsburg Throne, was held before and after his trial from 1914 to his death from TB in 1916.

I very much agree with you Fred, unfotunately the majority of the previous histrory is all but ignored by those that run the site.

The »first history« of Theresienstadt as one of the most important fortresses of the Austrian-Hungarian empire is not forgotten by the residents. When I visited last year, military re-enactments of that era were prominently publicised.

What? Military re-enactments in Theresienstadt with those 18th century Austrian white uniforms...fantastic. Thanks for the information.

True, unclegus. Given the tragic history of Theresienstadt in WW2, if the place had just remained as a place of mass deception, the horrors would have been lessened. The place was set up also as a transit camp (Durchgangslager) to you know where. That magnifies the horror of Theresienstadt's history in WW2.
