Kutna Hora

My daughter would like to visit Kutna Hora, has anyone been there and is it worthwhile?

We stopped there on our way to Cesky Krumlov in the summer of 2014. They have the bone church which is interesting and a little eerie. My brother-in-law wouldn't go in, he waited for us outside. If memory serves me correctly, there is also St. Barbara Church which is beautiful. We also took a tour of a silver mine which we prebooked. That was really fun, a little claustrophobic, but worth it. They also have dioramas at the end explaining how they turned the silver into currency, etc. we spent about 3 hours during our stop.

Worthwhile? You'll have to decide what that means to you but it's certainly quite accessible from Prague. What's drawing you Daughters attention? We took the train there from Prague in January 2016. It's an easy walk from the station to Church of our Lady of Assumption at Sedlec (not covered by Rick but worthy of a stop. It's had substantial funding to renovate it. The architecture is simple but interesting. There's a very cool attic area to explore, with unfinished beams and some exposed construction. The caretakers were very happy to see us as unfortunately I think they are overshadowed by the more publicized Bone Church), the Ossuary ( aka Bone Church maybe 10 additional minutes walk) and St Barbara's Cathedral (a 5 minute and perhaps €10 ride in a private shuttle van from outside the Ossuary). If you have more time I think the townsite nearest to St Barbara's would be interesting to explore. We didn't have time but it looked inviting. Check Google Images to see if these places are appealing to you.

Most people go to Kutna Hora for the "Bone Church" or Sedlac Ossuary. It is immediately morbidly fascinating, but soon becomes rather mundane. It tends to capture the imagination for a maximum of ten minutes. On the other hand, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist (across the street) is an undiscovered treasure and rare example of Baroque-Gothic architecture.

Make sure therefore that you buy the combination ticket, including the Sedlec Ossuary, Ss. Mary and John, and St. Barbara's Church (which usually incorrectly referred to as St. Barbara's Cathedral). N.B. A cathedral does not mean big church, but rather the seat of a bishop; St. Barbara's is a just particularly giant parish church!

You can find more information on things to see in Kutna Hora here.

We liked it, but you have to appreciate ossuaries. Not everyone does! It is a quick trip and there is a restaurant within walking distance, that gets recommended here a lot.

If you don't appreciate ossuaries, there is plenty of other things to see in K.H. St.Barbara Cathedral, silver mines, Italian court, historical center, etc. In middle ages Kutna Hora was the second richest town in the kingdom, right after Prague and you can see it in its architecture.
Dacicky is a very good restaurant but most people would not consider it walking distance from the ossuary. Half an hour plus.

Thank you everyone, some great info. My daughter is mostly interested in the ossuary, not my favorite choice though.

I have been to Kutna Hora many times. If your daughter just want to visit the Bone church it is an easy 10 minute walk from the train station, the church of the assumption is at the junction that heads off to the Bone church. the main town is a good 25-30 minute walk from the Bone church but you can get local buses ,taxis and last time I was there (2 years ago) a local mini bus from the bone church. The town is built on a fairly steep hill and there is loads to do all of which has already been metioned,A lovely town and well worth a day to visit.
there are several tour companies that run from Prague but it is one of these trips that is relatively easy to do on your own

I enjoyed visiting as a day trip from Prague. Lovely countryside and fun to see a small town. There are nice spots besides the bone church and great restaurants (see the RS guide for recommendations). I used a tour company to make it easy on me (first day in country, had jet lag) but as others have said it's easy on your own.

I haven't been to Kutna Hora. My sister really liked the silver mine (close to the town), but she always says that she's a spelunker at heart. She also emphasized that the spaces inside are very narrow and so it's not suitable for anyone with the slightest bit of claustrophobia.

Harold is right. Silver mines are at places very narrow so it is not suitable not only for people with claustrophobia but also for fat people.

The mines are fine to see and also "normal fat" people can go inside. First you need to use steps down. The mines are narrow and sometimes not very high, so the tall people needs to go forward bend. But before to go in the real mines they let you go to the model mine - so you know what to expect and if you are able to do the tour :)

That must be something new. They never took us to model mines.
